This is a newly created position that will help shape the County’s community standards program and carry out the priorities established by the Board of Supervisors for cleaner, safer, and better-looking properties and corridors across the County.

Key Responsibilities

  • Enforce county ordinances related to tall grass and weeds, trash and clutter, inoperative vehicles, outdoor tire storage, illegal outdoor storage, sign violations, and other exterior property or zoning issues.
  • Investigate citizen complaints, conduct field inspections, document violations with notes and photographs, and track cases from start to finish.
  • Issue notices of violation and correction orders and work with property owners and residents to achieve voluntary compliance whenever possible.
  • Provide monthly updates to the Board of Supervisors on complaint activity, enforcement actions, and compliance trends.
  • Serve as a friendly point of contact for neighborhood concerns and help educate the public about county ordinances.

This position enforces exterior property and zoning standards and does not handle interior residential maintenance inspections or landlord–tenant disputes, except to refer residents to the appropriate office or agency.

  • High school diploma or GED (an associate or bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, planning, environmental services, law enforcement, or a related field is preferred).
  • Experience in code enforcement, zoning, inspections, public works, environmental compliance, local government, or similar fields, or has equivalent experience that shows the knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the job.
  • Comfortable working with the public, handling complaints, and explaining regulations in a calm, professional manner.
  • Ability to prepare clear, accurate documentation for legal review, court, or administrative proceedings.
  • Valid Virginia driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
