We’re Hiring: Emergency 911 Telecommunicator
Location: Martinsville-Henry County 911 Communications Center
Schedule: Full-time | Shift may vary
Salary: $41,462 to $51,231 annually (effective July 1, 2026)
The Martinsville-Henry County 911 Communications Center is the first point of contact for residents and visitors experiencing emergencies in our community. Our Telecommunicators are the critical link between the public and the law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical personnel who respond when it matters most. The Martinsville-Henry County 911 Communications Center operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Qualified candidates must be available and willing to work any assigned shift, including days, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as operationally required.

As an Emergency 911 Telecommunicator, you will be responsible for:
- Receiving and processing emergency and non-emergency calls from the public
- Dispatching law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical services in response to a wide variety of incidents
- Accurately receiving, documenting, and transmitting information via radio, telephone, and computer systems
- Monitoring multiple communication channels simultaneously while maintaining composure under pressure
- Operating computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems and related communications technology
- Maintaining working knowledge of the Martinsville-Henry County geographical area to support accurate and timely response
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Ability to remain calm and perform effectively in high-stress, fast-paced situations
- Strong multi-tasking ability and capacity to manage competing priorities simultaneously
- Ability to communicate clearly, accurately, and professionally both verbally and in writing
- Ability to work any assigned shift including days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required
- Successful completion of the pre-employment screening process, including a personal history statement and the Criticall computer-based job skills assessment
- Prior experience in a communications, dispatch, or public safety environment
- Proficiency in data entry and general computer applications
- Experience operating radio and telephone communications equipment
- Familiarity with the Martinsville-Henry County geographical area
Schedule
The Martinsville-Henry County 911 Communications Center operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Qualified candidates must be available and willing to work any assigned shift, including days, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as operationally required.
Candidates who meet minimum qualifications will be contacted to complete the following steps:
- Personal history statement and Criticall assessment — a computer-based, job-related skills evaluation
- Background investigation — including criminal history review (Note: A felony conviction is disqualifying for this position due to required access to the Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN).
- Conditional offer of employment issued to final candidates
- Post-offer screenings — psychological evaluation, vision screening, and hearing screening, conducted after a conditional offer is made in accordance with applicable law
Individuals who accept an offer of employment must successfully complete the following during their orientation period:
- Entry-level Telecommunicator Certification through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS)
- Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) online certification
- Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) Certification
- On-the-job Field Training program
