We’re looking for an Executive Claims Director.
The Executive Claims Director reports into the Chief Claims Officer, and is preferably based in New Jersey, but we will consider a remote working location for appropriately qualified candidates.
Hamilton Select is our US excess and surplus lines insurer based in Richmond, Virginia, underwriting hard-to-place accounts in the small and middle-market space through an appointed wholesale broker network.
What you will do
- Assist in reviewing claims related systems, processes and procedures
- Oversee panel counsel and strategic vendor relationships and implementing any revisions necessary
- Assist in coordinating and leading training initiatives related to industry trends and claims handling best practices.
- Counsel claims examiners on coverage questions and litigation strategy
- Evaluation of additional opportunities for efficiencies
- Handle a claim pending of severity/complex files focusing on:
- Providing outstanding customer service and work with the insured, broker, and counsel in the adjustment of complex and excess casualty claims
- Identifying and evaluating coverage issues, preparing comprehensive coverage letters and analysis
- Conducting, coordinating, and directing investigation into loss facts and extent of third-party damages
- Directing and closely monitoring assignments to experts and defense counsel
- Evaluating information on coverage, liability, and damages to determine the extent of exposure to the insured and the company
- Setting reserves within authority or making claim recommendations concerning reserve changes to supervisor.
- Participating in virtual settlement conferences and mediations, with occasional travel as necessary
- Other duties as required by management.
What you require for the role
- Experience in handling severity and excess casualty claims or related litigation
- Experience working claims in the Excess and Surplus Market preferred
- Experience working with complex coverage issues required
- Multi-jurisdictional claims and litigation experience preferred
- Adjuster license and/or certifications preferred
- Highly advanced knowledge of claim processes, policies, procedures, claim systems, regulation, coverage, liability, damage evaluation, and/or settlement with exposures in excess of $1M
- Excellent at establishing close working relationships with other departments, including underwriting, operations, finance, IT, actuarial and legal
- Strong negotiating, analytical, written, and organizational skills
- Mediation and arbitration experience
- Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite and in-house claims systems)
- Ability to prioritize and manage deadlines
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
- Bachelor’s degree required; JD preferred
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to analyze data and make sound judgments
