Under the supervision of the Plant Manager, the Maintenance Manager directs, schedules, and manages the activities of hourly maintenance personnel to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations.

 

This role plans and executes preventive (PM) and predictive (PdM) maintenance (≥95% ontime completion) using the CMMS (MaintainX), ensures compliance with OSHA/HIOSH, NFPA 70E, NEC, GMP, HACCP, FSMA, and internal safety standards, and leads continuous improvement efforts to eliminate root causes of manufacturing problems. The Maintenance Manager provides technical support for Plant Maintenance Policies and Procedures and the Plant Safety Program, independently leading most projects with minimal direction.

  • Plan, schedule, and execute all PM and PdM activities with ≥95% on‑time completion using the CMMS (MaintainX).
  • Ensure all equipment operates safely, reliably, and within specification; verify maintenance work is accurate, documented, and compliant before release to production.
  • Respond promptly to equipment downtime; coordinate technicians, vendors, and operations to restore functionality quickly.
  • Maintain plant assets including utilities, boilers, pressure vessels, refrigeration, electrical systems, and structural equipment.
  • Follow the approved escalation process for safety, food safety, or production‑critical events including machine/equipment downtime.
  • Enforce GMP, HACCP, FSMA, sanitation, and housekeeping standards at all times.
  • Prevent contamination hazards caused by maintenance work (e.g., water, debris, metal, lubricants).
  • Comply with OSHA/HIOSH, NFPA 70E, NEC, and internal safety standards; maintain valid permits, inspections, and certifications for regulated equipment.
  • Enforce LOTO, confined space, machine guarding, electrical safety, and PPE programs; stop unsafe work immediately and drive corrective actions.
  • Ensure technicians are trained and qualified for assigned tasks; maintain a clean, organized, hazard‑free maintenance shop.
  • Report incidents and near misses within required timelines; ensure corrective follow‑up.
  • Lead, coach, and hold technicians accountable for performance, documentation, safety, conduct, and time & attendance.
  • Provide daily direction; coordinate priorities with Operations and Quality; maintain professional communication with all departments.
  • Complete administrative responsibilities (time approvals, work order closeout, purchasing, reporting) accurately and on time.
  • Build and maintain a culture of accountability, communication, and continuous improvement.
  • Manage maintenance labor, materials, and expenses within the approved budget.
  • Maintain 95% inventory accuracy for critical spare parts and reorder levels.
  • Oversee contractor/vendor performance; ensure all work meets standards.
  • Support capital planning and lead assigned projects through completion; coordinate resources and provide liaison with contractors, vendors, corporate technical personnel, and consultants.
  • Ensure all maintenance tasks are logged into the CMMS before end of shift.
  • Complete every work order with documented cause, action taken, and verification/return‑to‑service checks.
  • Maintain PM and PdM compliance at or above requirements.
  • Provide accurate weekly reporting on backlog, downtime, PM completion, and resource needs.
  • Lead root cause analysis (RCA) investigations for major or repeat equipment failures.
  • Implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs) within defined timelines.
  • Reduce reactive maintenance in favor of planned and predictive maintenance; demonstrate measurable improvements in equipment reliability and uptime.
  • Operate as the plant monitor for maintenance activities across production areas and administrative offices.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with Federal, State, and local regulations (air, water, solids); manage operating permits/licenses and renewals for equipment such as boilers and pressure vessels.
  • Prepare maintenance department budgets in coordination with the Plant Manager; monitor and analyze budget performance.
  • Manage site capital plan with the Plant Manager and Project Managers for all site‑related projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain dependable attendance; be available for emergencies, off‑shift response, and on‑call coverage.
  • Support a respectful, safety‑focused, high‑performance work environment.
  • Education: AA degree in a trade‑related field or equivalent related experience.
  • Experience: Five (5) years of maintenance experience (preferably in a food plant environment) and a minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience.
  • Regulatory & Technical Knowledge: OSHA/HIOSH laws, environmental regulations, NFPA 70E, NEC, welding practices, GMPs, HACCP, FSMA, and labor laws.
  • Technology: Proficiency with CMMS (MaintainX preferred) and MS Word, Excel, Outlook.
  • Core Skills: Effective verbal and written communication; analytical thinking; decision quality; problem solving with root cause capability; organization; planning; ability to handle multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Bachelor’s degree in Operations Management, Engineering, Food Technology, or equivalent.
  • Experience leading RCA/CAPA programs with demonstrated reliability improvements.
  • Experience managing capital projects and contractor/vendor performance in a regulated manufacturing environment.
