McMaster Children’s Hospital, located in Hamilton’s west-end, is the second largest children’s hospital in Canada. We are home to the fastest-growing kids-only emergency department in Ontario, one of Canada’s most advanced neonatal intensive care units, and a range of programs and clinics with unique expertise in a number of areas including children’s cancer, digestive diseases, and mental health.

The McMaster Children’s Hospital Eating Disorder Program is a clinical service for children and adolescents with an eating disorder. The program provides outpatient, day treatment and inpatient care. The inpatient unit provides 8 inpatient beds and 4 day treatment places. Care is provided through a multidisciplinary team consisting of nurses, physicians, dietitian, social workers, psychologists, child life specialist, child and youth counsellors and physiotherapist. The philosophy of care is applied in a family-centered care environment
The Registered Nurse (RN) functions as a valuable member of the interdisciplinary team and provides care to children and adolescents with complex mental health and medical issues related to a range of eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and eating disorders not otherwise specified. The RN will bring an excellent knowledge, understanding and skills including, but not limited to: mental health and medical status examination, establishment of effective therapeutic relationships, utilization of developmentally appropriate approaches, and implementation and evaluation of various therapeutic interventions. The RN will provide comprehensive care to each patient and family, on the foundation of the RNs competent knowledge of the medical and mental health components of eating disorders, in a family centered care setting. The RN will work in a health care setting that fosters collaboration, recognizes the value of all disciplines and team members, and ensures a culture of self-development and learning to ensure the most appropriate delivery of care to all patients and their families. As a member of the interdisciplinary team of clinicians the RN will attend rounds, participate in leading/co-leading group activities, communicate with families and caregivers, liaise with community resources as required as well as manage issues related to mental health and patient safety. The RN offers health teaching to patients and families on both the medical and mental health aspects of an eating disorder. The RN brings a strong knowledge of all Ontario legislation that affects the range of considerations including pediatric and adolescent care, Health Care Consent Act, and the Mental Health Act.

1. Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse 
2. Current Canadian Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing certification with the Canadian Nurses Association (CPMHN)** 
3. Minimum of 3 years recent experience in the last 4 years in a tertiary caresetting with children and adolescents who have an eating disorder 
4. Minimum of 3 years experience in the last 4 years in either a medical and/or a mental health inpatient tertiary care setting working with children and adolescents with an eating disorder 
5. Demonstrates clinical expertise in the psychosocial and physical assessment, management, planning and delivery of interventions for children and adolescents with an eating disorder 
6. Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Substitute Decisions Act, Health Care Consent Act, Personal Health Information Protection Act 
7. Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of the management and safety of children and adolescents who are at risk of self harm or self injurious behaviour and crisis management 
8. Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of the etiology of an eating disorder, the treatment interventions available, and the application of Family Based Therapy (FBT) Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Dialectic Behaviour Therapy (DBT) for children and adolescents 
9. Demonstrates excellence in effective therapeutic communication and interpersonal skills with patients, families and team members 
10. Demonstrates excellent knowledge of psychopharmacology 
11. Demonstrates effective teamwork, organizational, problem solving and conflict resolution skills 
12. Demonstrates knowledge, skill and ability in health teaching with child and adolescent patients and their families 
13. Ability to communicate in an effective manner with children, adolescents and their families under stressful conditions 
14. Demonstrates excellence in interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate and work within an inter-disciplinary team 
15. Ability to organize and coordinate patient and family-centered care with members of the health care team 
16. Certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) (will be provided by the program) 
17. Evidence of self-motivation, enthusiasm, and flexibility
