The ICCT has an immediate opening for a highly motivated and committed Associate Researcher or Researcher in the Fuels program who will work on low-GHG energy alternatives for the marine, aviation and road transport sectors. The Associate Researcher or Researcher will conduct robust research and analyses and develop policy recommendations, communicating actionable findings to policymakers, industry, and other stakeholders. This person will focus on EU policies, including the Renewable Energy Directive, FuelEU Maritime, and ReFuelEU (aviation). Representative work can be seen at the ICCT’s

You will:
- Analyze the cost, life-cycle GHG emissions, and availability of low-GHG renewable fuels, such as renewable hydrogen derivatives and biofuels.
- Write clear and concise technical reports, policy briefs, and articles including informative but easy-to-understand figures to summarize ICCT’s research for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Present findings in public and private forums.
- Collaborate effectively with the ICCT’s global Fuels team and EU colleagues, as well as with external partners, policymakers, and industry stakeholders.
You have:
- Associate Researcher: A bachelor’s or master's degree in environmental science, biology, chemistry, ecology, engineering, environmental policy or related discipline, in addition to at least two years of related experience, or alternatively a PhD degree
OR
- Researcher: A master’s or PhD degree in engineering, environmental science, environmental policy, energy and resources, or another relevant subject, in addition to at least three years of related experience.
- Excellent research and quantitative skills, with strong written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency in Excel; Python or R skills desired
- The ability to work independently with limited supervision, being highly organized, self-directed, creative, and strategic in problem-solving
- Availability for occasional work travel, mostly within the EU
- Fluency in English (required), plus other European languages (desired)
- Experience with life-cycle assessment and/or techno-economic analyses (desired)
What we offer:
Our preference is for the candidate to work out of our office in the heart of Berlin, Germany. However, following an initial 6-month orientation training in our Berlin office, we also provide the opportunity for the candidate to work from anywhere else within Germany, France, Ireland or Sweden, with the requirement to regularly visit the Berlin office. This position offers an annual starting of (Researcher) 84,000 Euro (40 hours/week, if working from Germany) or (Associate Researcher) 70,000 Euro (40 hours/week if working from Germany), depending on your level of experience. Specific combinations of academic degrees and highly relevant work experience will be considered when deciding whether the candidate is suitable for the Associate or Researcher level. We offer an initial 2-year contract, with the possibility of extension depending on organizational resources and performance.
