This hospital-based position provides leadership and strategic medical direction for obstetric care occurring at St. George Regional Hospital. The Medical Director is responsible for advancing safe, highly reliable, consistently delivered, evidence-based, patient-centered obstetric care across the hospital. The role provides clinical leadership for obstetricians, maternal fetal medicine specialists, OB hospitalists/laborists, family physicians practicing obstetrics, certified nurse midwives, advanced practice providers, and other clinicians participating in hospital obstetric care, regardless of employer affiliation.
The Medical Director will work collaboratively with hospital administration, physician leaders, nursing, operations, clinical programs, clinical shared services, quality, patient safety, medical education, research, and other supporting services. The leader will champion Intermountain Health’s mission, vision, values, Framework for Excellence, and Fundamentals of Extraordinary Care through clinical excellence, effective communication, innovation, continuous improvement, stewardship, and professional partnership.

Scope
The Medical Director - Obstetrics, St. George Regional Hospital is a hospital administrative leadership role with regional and enterprise participation expectations as appropriate. The position reports through the hospital Chief Medical Officer and collaborates closely with the, hospital administration, nursing leadership, operations leadership, the Obstetrics Department Chair or equivalent medical staff leader, the Senior Medical Director for Women’s Health, and applicable clinical program and specialty leaders.
The role encompasses obstetric care provided within St. George Regional Hospital, including Labor and Delivery, obstetric triage, antepartum services, postpartum obstetric care, inpatient and hospital-based maternal fetal medicine services, operative obstetrics, obstetric emergency response, and OB hospitalist/laborist services. The role does not include accountability for outpatient clinics or clinic operations and does not include employment decisions or direct supervisory accountability for physicians or advanced practice providers. Employment-related matters remain with each clinician’s employer. The Medical Director may participate in hospital medical staff, credentialing, privileging, peer review, quality, safety, and professional practice processes within the authority of those established structures.

  • Provide strategic direction, clinical leadership, oversight, and support for all hospital-based obstetric services at St. George Regional Hospital.
  • Lead collaboration among obstetricians and other clinicians participating in hospital obstetric care, including employed and affiliated physicians and providers, while respecting employer-specific reporting and employment structures.
  • Practice medicine with excellence as an example to others, exhibiting integrity, passion, energy, professional demeanor, effective communication, and behaviors consistent with Intermountain Health’s mission, vision, values, and Framework for Excellence.
  • Champion a culture of highly reliable, consistently delivered, evidence-based, patient-centered obstetric care.
  • Ensure that evidence-based clinical care standards, clinical guidelines, protocols, safety bundles, and best practices are developed, reviewed, communicated, and effectively implemented for appropriate hospital obstetric caregivers.
  • Lead and participate in the development, standardization, and implementation of hospital obstetric care models that best meet patient needs while considering available resources, technology, innovation, and industry advancements.
  • Partner with hospital nursing and operational leaders to support safe and effective care in Labor and Delivery, obstetric triage, antepartum, postpartum obstetric care, operative obstetrics, and other hospital obstetric settings.
  • Provide clinical leadership for OB hospitalist/laborist services and maternal fetal medicine services delivered within the hospital, including coordination, clinical standards, and integration with the broader obstetric medical staff.
  • Facilitate effective relationships and communication among hospital obstetric clinicians, department leadership, medical staff leadership, nursing, operations, and administration.
  • Meet regularly with relevant leaders and clinicians to share essential information, receive feedback, identify barriers, and support successful performance of hospital obstetric services.
  • Attend and participate in applicable hospital, department, medical staff, Desert Region, Women’s Health, and enterprise meetings, councils, collaboratives, and programs.
  • Lead or participate in hospital obstetric service line meetings and provide regular review of quality metrics, clinical outcomes, patient experience, safety events, and programmatic improvements.
  • Partner with physician leaders and subspecialty medical directors to promote seamless coordination of obstetric services and clinical programs across the hospital care continuum.
  • Promote team-based care and develop standards and processes that support high-functioning interdisciplinary clinical teams.
  • Encourage professional engagement, collaboration, learning, and professional satisfaction among physicians and advanced practice providers participating in hospital obstetric care.
  • Facilitate and participate in education and training of hospital obstetric clinicians and staff, including education related to clinical standards, protocols, quality and safety priorities, and assigned initiatives such as fetal heart tracing training.
  • Support orientation and integration of clinicians who are newly credentialed or privileged to provide obstetric services at St. George Regional Hospital, in partnership with the appropriate medical staff and operational leaders.
  • Provide consistent and concise recommendations for evidence-based hospital obstetric care to practicing OB/GYN, family medicine, maternal fetal medicine, certified nurse midwife, and advanced practice providers.
  • Lead evaluation of new technology, innovation, care models, and clinical practices for potential implementation in hospital obstetric services.
  • Support local innovation and facilitate sharing and scaling of successful hospital-based obstetric practices through appropriate regional and enterprise channels.

  • Oversee and advance quality, safety, stewardship, and patient experience for hospital obstetric care provided by physicians and APPs with privileges at St. George Regional Hospital.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and ongoing review of quality dashboards, departmental key performance indicators, key process indicators, and patient outcome measures for hospital obstetric services.
  • Monitor and drive key performance outcomes; review results with appropriate hospital, department, nursing, operations, quality, and medical staff leaders; and identify opportunities to improve care.
  • Lead or support process improvement efforts and clinical program development directed toward achievement of hospital obstetric quality, safety, utilization, stewardship, patient experience, and strategic goals.
  • Participate in peer review, HEAT reviews, root cause analyses, rapid event investigations, case reviews, and other established quality and patient safety processes involving obstetric care; communicate lessons learned and support resulting clinical or protocol improvements.
  • Address clinical quality, safety, professionalism, or performance concerns through appropriate hospital medical staff (Department Chair and MEC) and quality structures. The Medical Director will not make employment decisions and will coordinate employment-related follow-up with the clinician’s employer when appropriate.
  • Support OB/Gyn Department Chair as requested in development and periodic review of credentialing and privileging criteria for hospital obstetric services, including maternal fetal medicine and OB hospitalist/laborist practice, through authorized medical staff processes.
  • Optimize the patient experience in hospital obstetric care and partner with the Clinical Excellence and hospital leaders to address patient concerns through established processes.
  • Promote clinical care that is high in measurable quality, value, service, safety, and stewardship.

  • Participate in strategic planning, goal setting, and performance review for hospital obstetric services and applicable Women’s Health priorities.
  • Work collaboratively with hospital and regional medical, operational, and nursing leadership in coordination of support services, including Clinical Programs, Clinical Shared Services, Clinical Excellence, Digital Technology Services, Research, and Medical Education.
  • Drive achievement of hospital and system goals applicable to obstetric care, including quality, safety, patient experience, utilization, documentation, stewardship, complications, and financial performance.
  • Collaborate with department directors, hospital administration, and physician leaders to optimize cost controls, efficient use of hospital resources, and value of care.
  • Support appropriate obstetric telehealth and maternal fetal medicine telehealth services that affect hospital care, as requested.
  • Support research, medical education, and scholarly endeavors related to hospital obstetric care.
  • Provide obstetric specialty review or consultation to Intermountain Health entities, clinical programs, and supporting services when requested and within the scope of the position.

Requirements

  • M.D. or D.O. degree from an accredited institution. Education is verified.
  • Residency training and board certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology. A physician board certified in Maternal Fetal Medicine who otherwise meets the requirements may also qualify.
  • Licensed or able to be licensed to practice medicine in the State of Utah.
  • Holds active privileges, or is qualified to be credentialed and privileged, at St. George Regional Hospital.
  • Demonstrated effective leadership skills and the ability to work effectively and collegially with clinical and non-clinical staff, move others to action, and model the vision and values of the organization.
  • Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Exceptional character and integrity and commitment to the mission, vision, and values of Intermountain Health.

  • Medical staff or hospital clinical leadership experience.
  • Clinical experience in obstetrics with progressive leadership responsibility.
  • Training or demonstrated experience in clinical quality improvement, patient safety, process improvement, or high-reliability care.
