Pay Grade/Pay Range:  Minimum: $53,500 - Midpoint: $66,900 (Salaried E8)

Department/Organization: 214231 - Civil Const and Env Engineering

Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm

Job Summary: The Postdoctoral Fellow provides for an internship and continuation of scholarly activity and research after achieving the PhD or other doctoral degree under the direction of a senior faculty member who serves as a mentor for the postdoctoral appointee.

Additional Department Summary: The Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering Department at The University of Alabama is seeking a candidate for a Postdoctoral fellow position. This position is available to individuals with research interests and expertise in integrative eco-hydrological and eco-physiological research aimed at improving representation of plant stress responses in next-generation, 3-D ecosystem models. This position involves developing and implementing mechanistic modules for plant hydraulics, stomatal regulation, photosynthesis, and carbohydrate transport to be included within the HIGRAD/FIRETEC modeling framework developed by Los Alamos National Laboratory. Work also involves designing and conducting numerical experiments to quantify vegetation responses to drought, salinity, and flooding. Work closely with a multi-institution team, contribute to model validation and uncertainty assessment, integrate lidar-derived stand structure into simulations, and produce high-impact publications that inform forest management and climate-adaptation strategies. Applicants with background in fluid mechanics, computational methods, data science, plant hydraulics and material transport, thermodynamics, and eco-physiology will be given priority consideration.

Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. or other terminal degree in Civil Engineering or related field such as physics (statistical, nonlinear, or fluid dynamics) and applied mathematics.

Skills and Knowledge: Computational methods, thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, porous media flow and soil physics, plant hydrodynamics, and dynamical systems.

Preferred Qualifications: Background in fluid mechanics, computational methods, data science, plant hydraulics and material transport, thermodynamics, and eco-physiology will be given priority consideration.

Good knowledge of scientific programming languages, preferably open-source tools such as Python; and familiarity with high-performance computing is desirable.

Background Investigation Statement: Prior to hiring, the final candidate(s) must successfully pass a pre-employment background investigation and information obtained from social media and other internet sources. A prior conviction reported as a result of the background investigation DOES NOT automatically disqualify a candidate from consideration for this position. A candidate with a prior conviction or negative behavioral red flags will receive an individualized review of the prior conviction or negative behavioral red flags before a hiring decision is made.

Equal Employment Opportunity: The University of Alabama is an Equal Employment/Equal Educational Opportunity Institution. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment or volunteer status without regard to any legally protected basis and will not be discriminated against because of their protected status. Applicants and employees of this institution are protected under Federal law from discrimination on several bases. More information is available in the EEOC’s Know Your Rights: Workplace discrimination is illegal poster.

The University of Alabama affirms its longstanding commitment to institutional neutrality, free speech, and academic freedom.
