You will serve as a primary liaison with VA HIMS leaders, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant coding operations.
The position combines team leadership, quality assurance, productivity management, coder coaching, and client communication.
You will play a key role in maintaining coding accuracy across inpatient and outpatient services while addressing documentation and billing issues.
The environment is highly structured, mission-driven, and focused on delivering reliable healthcare coding support to veteran populations.
The initial term is 12 months, with the possibility of four additional 12-month option periods.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for VA HIMS supervisors and coding leads, maintaining availability during required Eastern Time business hours.

  • Assign coding work, monitor productivity and turnaround times, and proactively communicate risks when facility deadlines may not be met.

  • Conduct ongoing quality reviews covering at least 5% of coded data, including ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, DRGs, and abstracted data, and provide weekly facility-level results.

  • Develop corrective action plans and coach coders when accuracy falls below the required 95% threshold.

  • Respond to coder questions involving documentation and coding interpretation, escalating complex issues to appropriate VA contacts when necessary.

  • Coordinate record re-reviews requested before billing and support responses to claim denials.

  • Prepare and contribute to monthly progress reports, quarterly summaries, kickoff materials, work plans, staffing rosters, and training documentation.

  • Train coding staff on VA policies, VHA coding guidelines, and VistA and CPRS workflows while monitoring required training and background-investigation requirements.

  • Anticipate staffing changes and coordinate transition plans, including required overlap periods when coders are reassigned.
