This is a senior commercial leadership role focused on bringing future fusion power projects to market through strategic customer relationships and long-term energy contracts.
You will define and execute origination strategies that translate a developing project pipeline into committed revenue, capital, and financeable assets.
The role combines power market expertise, structured contracting, commercial strategy, negotiation, and partnership development.
You will engage directly with utilities, hyperscalers, industrial customers, electric cooperatives, government agencies, and other major energy counterparties.
Working closely with project development, finance, legal, external affairs, and engineering teams, you will align customer requirements with project economics and deployment plans.
You will also build and lead an origination team while identifying attractive markets, regulatory opportunities, and innovative approaches to risk allocation.

As Head of Origination, you will lead the commercial origination strategy for future power projects, from market identification and customer development through contract execution and long-term relationship management.
- Lead the origination, structuring, negotiation, and execution of long-term power purchase agreements, tolling arrangements, environmental product contracts, and capacity contracts.
- Develop and maintain strategic relationships with anchor customers, including utilities, electric cooperatives, hyperscalers, industrial off-takers, and government agencies.
- Define and execute wholesale and retail origination strategies that create contracted revenue streams supporting project financing and long-term business objectives.
- Lead commercial activities for utility procurement processes, competitive solicitations, bilateral negotiations, and RFP responses.
- Partner with project development, finance, legal, external affairs, and engineering teams to align customer requirements, project economics, and deployment strategy.
- Build, mentor, and manage a high-performing origination team focused on excellence, creativity, ownership, and continuous improvement.
- Develop innovative contract structures that support early-adopter engagement while appropriately managing risks associated with novel power projects.
- Identify high-value power markets, RTOs, and regulatory environments that support attractive commercial opportunities.
- Monitor wholesale energy market trends, resource plans, and regulatory developments across North American RTOs and ISOs to inform market entry and contracting strategies.
- Develop and own commercial frameworks for project opportunities, including market analysis, risk assessment, and strategic recommendations for executive leadership.
- Represent the organization at industry events, customer meetings, and strategic forums as a subject matter expert in energy origination and emerging clean power.
- Oversee post-execution contract lifecycle management, ensuring compliance with contractual obligations and maintaining strong long-term customer relationships.
- Develop creative approaches to equitable risk sharing between counterparties.
- Prioritize multiple complex projects and competing deadlines while maintaining high-quality execution.
- Operate with persistence and accountability, following initiatives through completion despite uncertainty or setbacks.
- Take initiative in a fast-moving environment, establishing priorities, timelines, and solutions for broad and ambiguous challenges.
- Make informed commercial judgments that can materially affect major projects and strategic initiatives.
- Prepare clear, high-quality written and verbal communications for internal and external audiences.
- Challenge senior leadership constructively when supported by sound analysis, data, and commercial reasoning.
Requirements
~2 min readThe role requires substantial experience in power origination or structured energy sales, deep knowledge of North American electricity markets, and the ability to lead complex commercial negotiations with senior stakeholders.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Business, Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field, or 10+ years of progressive energy industry experience with at least 5 years leading power origination, structured energy sales, or power marketing.
- Proven track record originating and closing large-scale, long-term PPAs, tolling agreements, environmental product contracts, capacity contracts, or comparable energy agreements.
- Deep technical understanding of North American wholesale power markets, RTO/ISO rules, transmission dynamics, and commercial risk allocation.
- Established executive-level network across utilities, corporate and hyperscaler procurement organizations, and wholesale counterparties.
- Strong financial acumen and experience partnering with project finance teams to evaluate contract bankability and risk-adjusted returns.
- Superior negotiation, presentation, written communication, and stakeholder management skills, including experience presenting to C-suite executives and investment committees.
- Entrepreneurial mindset and ability to turn broad, ambiguous opportunities into structured strategies and executed transactions.
- Master's degree, MBA, or advanced technical degree is preferred.
- Understanding of global wholesale power markets is advantageous.
- Experience with clean baseload power, energy storage, infrastructure, or first-of-a-kind technologies is a plus.
- Experience managing basis risk, including nodal versus zonal pricing, shape risk, congestion, and line-loss settlement mechanisms.
- Knowledge of advanced decarbonization procurement approaches, including hourly 24/7 carbon-free energy matching and transferable clean-energy tax credits.
- Familiarity with utility retail tariffs, standby charges, and wheeling arrangements.
- Familiarity with federal energy procurement pathways, tax equity structures, or M&A-driven origination is advantageous.
- Willingness to travel regularly for customer meetings, site visits, and industry conferences.
- Ability to work effectively in an environment involving industrial hazards and specialized energy technologies.
- Ability to work extended periods while typing, standing, or sitting, and willingness to occasionally work nights, weekends, or on-call schedules when required.
- Ability to meet applicable U.S. export-control requirements for roles involving controlled technologies or information.
