The Manager, Total Rewards will lead the strategy, design, administration, and compliance of compensation, benefits, payroll, and broader total rewards programs.
This role combines strategic leadership with hands-on operational ownership across a fully remote workforce of more than 400 employees.
You will use market data, compensation analysis, and internal equity insights to shape competitive and sustainable rewards programs.
The position will oversee annual compensation cycles, variable compensation, benefits administration, payroll operations, and health plan strategy.
You will also serve as a trusted advisor to employees and leaders, translating complex payroll, benefits, and regulatory matters into practical solutions.
As the function grows, you will build scalable processes and develop a Payroll & Benefits Coordinator to expand operational capacity.
The ideal candidate is analytical, highly detail-oriented, comfortable with ambiguity, and able to balance long-term strategy with precise day-to-day execution.

Own the overall strategy, design, competitiveness, administration, and compliance of compensation, benefits, payroll, and total rewards programs.

Conduct market benchmarking, internal equity reviews, compensation modeling, and pay analysis to inform salary structures, incentive programs, and benefits decisions.

Lead annual compensation review cycles and administer Variable Compensation Plans, providing data-driven recommendations to leadership.

Direct the strategy and administration of self-funded health plans, including broker, carrier, and vendor relationships, renewals, contract negotiations, and open enrollment.

Oversee end-to-end payroll operations for a 400+ employee remote workforce, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant multi-state payroll processing.

Manage benefits administration, including enrollments, employee status changes, terminations, carrier updates, ACA reporting, 401(k) audit documentation, and expense reimbursement reconciliation.

Monitor changes in employment and benefits regulations, including ERISA, ACA, FMLA, pay transparency requirements, and related legislation, translating requirements into practical policies and processes.

Lead pay equity assessments and FLSA classification reviews to promote consistency, compliance, and equitable employment practices.

Serve as a trusted point of contact for employee and leadership questions related to compensation, payroll, benefits, and total rewards.

Build and scale the total rewards function by defining the responsibilities of a Payroll & Benefits Coordinator, supporting recruitment and onboarding, and transitioning appropriate operational responsibilities.

Develop scalable processes, systems, documentation, and controls that improve efficiency, accuracy, employee experience, and organizational growth.

Partner with leaders, employees, vendors, brokers, payroll providers, and external partners to resolve issues and continuously improve total rewards programs.
Requirements

7–10 years of progressive experience in compensation, benefits, payroll, total rewards, or a related discipline.

Hands-on experience managing payroll operations, including multi-state payroll processing and payroll tax compliance.

Demonstrated experience leading compensation programs, annual review cycles, benchmarking initiatives, pay analysis, and broader total rewards strategy.

Strong knowledge of ERISA, ACA, FMLA, pay transparency requirements, and related employment regulations.

Experience managing benefits administration, health plans, carrier and vendor relationships, renewals, and vendor negotiations.

Direct experience with self-funded or self-insured health plans is highly relevant to the role.

Proficiency with payroll systems such as ADP or Paylocity and experience working with HRIS platforms.

Experience with BambooHR is strongly preferred.

Strong analytical and quantitative skills, with the ability to interpret market data, compensation trends, internal equity information, and payroll data.

Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.

Ability to balance strategic planning with hands-on operational execution in a growing environment.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to explain complex compensation, payroll, benefits, and compliance concepts clearly.

Demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships with employees, executives, vendors, brokers, and external providers.

Experience leading through organizational change and developing scalable programs, processes, and teams from the ground up.

CPP, CEBS, SHRM-SCP, SPHR, or a related professional certification is a plus.
