This is a senior engineering opportunity focused on building digital products that improve how government services are delivered. You will work within a cross-functional team alongside product managers, designers, user researchers, engineers, and other specialists to create secure, reliable, and user-centered software. The role emphasizes technical excellence, lean-agile engineering practices, and thoughtful use of modern technologies and open-source solutions. You will contribute across the full software lifecycle, from architecture and implementation to testing, reliability, and continuous improvement. You will also help identify technical debt and system risks while designing pragmatic solutions that improve performance and maintainability. This fully remote position offers the opportunity to apply strong engineering expertise to meaningful public-interest technology.

Design, build, and maintain clean, reusable, production-quality software as part of a multidisciplinary, cross-functional product team.
Apply lean-agile engineering principles, including API-first design, simple and maintainable architectures, continuous integration, version control, and automated testing.
Select appropriate programming languages, frameworks, tools, and technologies based on the needs of each project, with an emphasis on pragmatic and open-source solutions where appropriate.
Analyze existing systems to identify technical debt, instability, reliability concerns, performance issues, and other opportunities for improvement, then design, document, and communicate effective solutions.
Build secure and compliant software while proactively addressing common application vulnerabilities and incorporating security considerations throughout the development lifecycle.
Apply sound data engineering principles, selecting and working with appropriate datastores and persistence strategies for different software systems and use cases.
Design systems with performance, reliability, availability, maintainability, and scalability in mind, understanding how individual components interact across the broader architecture.
Maintain a strong user-centered perspective, considering how technical decisions and implementation choices affect the people ultimately using the software.
Collaborate directly with stakeholders to understand their needs, explain technical tradeoffs in clear language, and help shape practical product and engineering decisions.

Demonstrated ability to write clean, functional, reusable code supported by comprehensive automated testing and strong engineering practices.
Strong understanding of software architecture and system design, including performance, reliability, availability, persistence, and interactions between system components.
Experience developing secure, compliant applications and understanding common software vulnerabilities and approaches to mitigating them.
Solid understanding of data engineering fundamentals and experience working with different datastores to manage persistent application data.
Strong stakeholder communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts and tradeoffs into clear, accessible language for non-technical audiences.
User-centered mindset and the ability to consider user needs, outcomes, and real-world implications when making technical decisions.
Experience building accessible software that meets Section 508 and WCAG standards is a plus.
Experience working in constrained or regulated environments, such as legacy systems, Authority to Operate (ATO) boundaries, or FedRAMP-authorized cloud services, is desirable.
Experience with infrastructure as code, such as Terraform, and/or immutable infrastructure technologies such as Docker is beneficial.
Experience contributing to open-source projects or developing software in public/open environments is a plus.
U.S. citizenship is required for employment, and all work must be performed within the United States, excluding U.S. territories.
Depending on the project, the ability to obtain a public trust determination or security clearance, potentially up to Top Secret, may be required.
Successful completion of a background check is required.
Certain federal contracts may require a degree or allow additional years of relevant experience as a substitute.
Ability to travel as needed.
