This is a full-time, remote-eligible engineering role focused on reducing technical debt and transforming legacy applications into scalable, cloud-native systems. You will modernize .NET and C# applications, decompose monoliths, and build clean microservices and APIs designed for long-term maintainability. The role combines hands-on software engineering with cloud re-platforming across AWS, containerized environments, and modern infrastructure. You will also use AI-assisted development tools to analyze large codebases, accelerate refactoring, generate documentation, and improve test coverage. Working closely with Engineering, Architecture, Product, QA, Security, and Infrastructure teams, you will help establish reusable modernization patterns and engineering standards. The position offers an opportunity to influence how systems are designed, delivered, and evolved at scale.

Identify, prioritize, and remediate technical debt across existing codebases while partnering with engineering leadership to create and execute a structured modernization backlog.
Refactor and re-platform legacy .NET and C# applications into modern, cloud-native architectures that improve maintainability, performance, scalability, and delivery velocity without disrupting active product development.
Decompose monolithic applications into loosely coupled microservices and APIs with clear domain boundaries, applying principles such as SOLID, clean architecture, domain-driven design, and separation of concerns.
Replace brittle, redundant, or unnecessarily complex systems with simpler, sustainable solutions that are easier to understand, test, maintain, and evolve.
Leverage AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot to analyze legacy codebases, identify duplication and high-risk areas, accelerate refactoring, generate tests, and document undocumented systems.
Re-platform workloads onto AWS using cloud-native services and patterns such as Lambda, ECS/EKS, Step Functions, Temporal, API Gateway, SQS/SNS, and other managed services.
Apply modern architecture patterns including event-driven architecture, CQRS, and domain-driven design to position re-architected systems for future innovation and increased client scale.
Implement database migrations and schema modernization using tools such as Flyway, ensuring safe, version-controlled transitions away from legacy data models.
Build containerized services with Docker and develop infrastructure-as-code using Terraform, AWS CDK, or similar technologies to create consistent, repeatable, and auditable environments.
Establish reusable modernization patterns, architecture blueprints, and engineering standards covering code quality, testing, documentation, API design, observability, and maintainability.
Instrument modernized systems with structured logging, distributed tracing, and metrics to improve operational visibility alongside application quality.
Collaborate with Engineering Managers, Architects, Product teams, QA, Security, and Infrastructure teams to sequence modernization efforts alongside active feature delivery while maintaining quality, compliance, and performance.
Participate in architecture reviews, design discussions, and pull request reviews, bringing a modernization and simplicity-focused perspective to technical decisions.
Partner with AI and backend engineering teams to identify opportunities for AI-powered modernization and contribute to responsible, effective AI-assisted development practices.
Document architectural decisions, migration approaches, system changes, and reusable patterns to strengthen institutional knowledge and reduce reliance on undocumented or tribal knowledge.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.
3+ years of professional software engineering experience, including demonstrated experience with legacy modernization, refactoring, or application re-platforming initiatives.
Strong proficiency in .NET and C#, with experience working across both legacy and modern application codebases.
Solid understanding of software design principles, including SOLID, clean architecture, domain-driven design, and separation of concerns.
Experience designing and developing RESTful APIs and microservices, with strong judgment around clean, maintainable, consumer-friendly API contracts.
Hands-on experience with cloud-native development on AWS, including one or more of Lambda, Step Functions, ECS/EKS, API Gateway, SQS, or SNS.
Familiarity with Docker and containerized application deployment, as well as Git and GitHub-based collaborative development workflows.
Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly and effectively with both technical colleagues and non-technical stakeholders.
Experience with AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot, particularly for codebase analysis, refactoring, testing, or documentation, is preferred.
Familiarity with workflow orchestration using Temporal or AWS Step Functions in production environments is preferred.
Experience with database migration tooling such as Flyway and safe schema evolution practices is a plus.
Experience with infrastructure-as-code technologies such as Terraform, AWS CDK, or Pulumi is preferred.
Familiarity with event-driven architecture and asynchronous messaging technologies such as SQS, SNS, EventBridge, or Kafka is beneficial.
Experience working in an Agile/Scrum environment is preferred.
A strong commitment to simplicity, well-structured systems, maintainability, and building software that is easy for future engineers to understand and evolve.

✓Starting base salary of $97,000–$122,000, with the final offer determined by factors including transferable skills, experience, training, location, business needs, and market conditions.
