This remote-first role is an opportunity to shape backend systems and platform capabilities that support modern, high-performing web experiences. You will architect and evolve distributed systems, APIs, and data-intensive services with a strong focus on reliability, scalability, security, and operational excellence. The position combines hands-on software engineering with technical leadership across complex, cross-functional initiatives. You will partner with product, design, data, and machine learning teams to turn emerging customer needs and AI/ML capabilities into robust production solutions. You will also influence engineering strategy, improve development standards, and mentor engineers across the organization. This is a high-impact environment for an experienced engineer who enjoys solving ambiguous problems while maintaining a strong bar for quality and craft.

Architect, design, implement, and evolve backend systems, platform services, APIs, and distributed infrastructure using Python and related technologies.
Partner with data scientists and machine learning engineers to productionize AI/ML capabilities and integrate models into reliable backend systems.
Design and scale distributed systems capable of processing large volumes of data while maintaining strong performance, availability, and operational reliability.
Build secure and resilient data storage and retrieval systems with a strong focus on data integrity, privacy, governance, and access control.
Contribute across the full product lifecycle, from early-stage exploration and technical design through implementation, launch, and ongoing production ownership.
Lead complex technical initiatives spanning multiple teams, influencing architecture, roadmap execution, and engineering strategy.
Write maintainable, well-tested, observable code and continuously improve engineering tooling, systems, standards, and development practices.
Identify opportunities to improve backend platforms, infrastructure, development workflows, and overall engineering effectiveness.
Conduct thorough code reviews and establish high standards for system design, reliability, and software quality.
Mentor engineers and share expertise in backend architecture, distributed systems, technical design, and engineering best practices.
Collaborate with product, design, data, and ML stakeholders to translate evolving business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
Stay current with emerging technologies and proactively assess opportunities to improve platform capabilities and engineering outcomes.
Support hiring and team-building efforts where appropriate and contribute to the growth of engineering talent.

Requirements

7+ years of software engineering experience, including deep expertise in backend engineering and distributed systems at scale.
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Strong software design and development background with experience in languages such as Python, Java, or Go.
Proven experience designing, building, and operating reliable distributed systems and data-intensive services in production.
Strong understanding of scalability, fault tolerance, observability, performance optimization, and operational excellence.
Advanced knowledge of backend API design, service-oriented architecture, asynchronous processing, data modeling, and modern architectural patterns.
Experience designing secure systems and implementing robust approaches to data integrity, privacy, and access control.
Hands-on engineering mindset, with the ability to lead through implementation and contribute directly to production code.
Demonstrated technical leadership across ambiguous and cross-functional initiatives, with the ability to influence architecture and engineering strategy beyond an immediate team.
Strong collaboration skills and experience partnering with product, design, data, and ML stakeholders.
Excellent code review, technical mentorship, and engineering quality practices.
Strong judgment and communication skills, with the ability to make pragmatic technical tradeoffs in fast-moving environments.
Experience mentoring and developing engineers, with hiring or team-building experience considered a plus.
Curiosity and openness to emerging technologies, including a proactive approach to adopting and applying AI to improve engineering workflows and outcomes.
