This role supports federal research and transportation communications programs by turning complex technical content into clear, accurate, publication-ready materials. You will edit and manage highly technical documents, working closely with engineers, researchers, and other subject-matter experts. The position covers the complete document lifecycle, from outlining and substantive editing through formatting, accessibility review, and final publication. You will help translate technical data, engineering concepts, schematics, and research findings into communications that are authoritative and accessible. Success in the role requires strong editorial judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to manage competing deadlines. The position is primarily remote, with occasional travel possible for client engagements.

Edit technical brochures, standard operating procedures, research reports, technical summaries, and other complex federal documents for accuracy, clarity, consistency, and compliance with applicable agency standards.
Transform raw data, engineering terminology, and highly technical source material into authoritative, publication-ready content, performing reference checks, fact-checking, and copyright compliance reviews as needed.
Apply expert knowledge of the GPO Style Manual and working knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style to maintain consistent editorial standards across print and electronic deliverables.
Integrate complex schematics, figures, and data tables effectively with narrative content so that technical information remains accurate, understandable, and suitable for both technical review and public transparency.
Collaborate with engineers, researchers, and technical personnel to understand complex concepts and translate them into clear, accessible communications for broader audiences.
Independently manage assigned documents throughout their full lifecycle, including outlining, substantive editing, copyediting, proofreading, rewriting, formatting, final review, and online or web publication.
Correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, formatting, logical flow, and structural issues while maintaining the technical integrity and intended meaning of source materials.
Ensure deliverables meet Section 508 accessibility requirements and align with applicable research and development communication guidelines and reference standards.

Requirements

At least 5 years of experience in technical writing, technical editing, documentation, or a closely related field; experience supporting highway or surface transportation research is preferred.
Bachelor’s degree in Technical Writing, English, communications, or a related scientific or technical discipline.
Expert-level command of the GPO Style Manual and working knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style, with demonstrated ability to apply editorial standards consistently across complex technical content.
Demonstrated experience reviewing technical publications for Section 508 accessibility compliance and producing accessible documents for government or public-sector audiences.
Experience supporting complex projects, transformation initiatives, or communications programs within the federal government, with the ability to work effectively in sophisticated client environments.
Strong critical-thinking, analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and time-management skills, with the ability to manage competing deadlines and multiple deliverables simultaneously.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain editorial recommendations, organize ideas logically, and collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Ability to remain calm and productive under pressure, adapt quickly to changing priorities, incorporate client feedback efficiently, and get up to speed on complex technical subjects.
Strategic and forward-looking mindset, with an interest in evolving communication practices, technologies, and approaches to technical content.
Ability to obtain and maintain a public trust clearance and legal authorization to work in the United States.
