In pursuit of this mission, we are hiring an English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher. An ESL teacher supports non-native English speakers in developing their language skills through structured lessons in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. They tailor instruction to meet diverse student needs, fostering a supportive learning environment to enhance communication abilities and cultural understanding. This role is essential in both K-12 and adult education settings, helping students achieve academic and personal growth.
  • Bachelor's degree in teaching English as a second language or related field
  • Master's degree in similar fields preferred
  • Valid Michigan Teacher Certificate with ESL endorsement (NS)
  • Successful teaching experience with Multilingual Learners (MLs) in an urban setting
  • Previous success working with students from a variety of culture and linguistic backgrounds, age, and language/academic proficiency levels
  • Success working in an ambiguous and independent environment
  • Ability to support and promote academic instruction in the four domains of the English language
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain standards of professional conduct and work ethics including attendance, punctuality and performance is required
  • Demonstrated ability to actively seek opportunities to grow professionally

  • Deliver ESL/ELD instruction to multilingual learner newcomers based on their language proficiency levels to support English acquisition and enhance academic achievement.
  • Align curriculum with WIDA English language development standards and pedagogy.
  • Use data to guide and differentiate instruction effectively.
  • Build relationships with students and parents to create a safe, welcoming, and engaging learning environment.
  • Maintain accurate records for student evaluation and progress monitoring.
  • Coordinate with program staff to ensure procedures for welcoming new multilingual learners are followed.
  • Collaborate with school administrators, counselors, and teachers to support the cognitive, physical, emotional, social, and communication development of multilingual learners.
  • Foster a learning environment that promotes successful social and academic experiences related to language proficiency and acculturation.
  • Incorporate feedback from school leaders, colleagues, students, and professional development sessions to improve teaching practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall mission of the school or district.
