The PR & Communications Manager is responsible for leading and implementing Mason Korea’s strategic communications and branding initiatives to strengthen institutional reputation, visibility, and engagement. This position oversees brand management, media relations, content development, digital communications, and public relations activities in alignment with George Mason University’s brand standards. The manager collaborates with internal and external stakeholders, supervises communications staff, and manages communication-related budgets and partnerships to ensure consistent and effective messaging across all channels. This position reports directly to the Associate Dean of External Affairs and supervises the Marketing and Communications Coordinator.
Key Responsibilities
Branding
- Oversees Mason Korea’s brand communications to ensure alignment with George Mason University’s brand guidelines.
- Reviews branded materials from internal units to ensure compliance with branding standards.
- Acts as the primary liaison between Mason Korea and the Office of University Branding, staying informed on brand updates and sharing Mason Korea news.
Strategic Communications
- Develops and executes Mason Korea’s comprehensive brand communication strategy for online and offline channels.
- Collaborates with key stakeholders to ensure consistent, effective news coverage in line with the branding strategy.
Media Relations & Outreach
- Manages local PR agency to oversee media relations and press materials.
- Maintains relationships with PR officers from IGC, IFEZ, and Incheon City.
- Coordinates with communications counterparts in Fairfax to exchange relevant news and updates.
Content Creation & Management
- Writes news stories for Mason Korea’s web news page.
- Writes customized copy for official social media channels.
- Oversees web content management, ensuring timely updates by relevant units.
Budget & Supervision
- Plans and allocates the PR financial budget for the fiscal year.
- Supervises the Marketing and Communications Coordinator.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)
- Knowledge of public relations, strategic communications, branding, media relations, and digital communication strategies.
- Understanding of social media management, web content development, and institutional communication practices, preferably within higher education.
- Familiarity with the Korean media landscape and public sector communication processes.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both Korean and English, including professional copywriting, editing, and storytelling abilities.
- Strong organizational, project management, and multitasking skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal, relationship-building, and stakeholder management skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across diverse groups.
- Ability to independently develop and execute communication initiatives, supervise staff, manage budgets and vendors, and exercise sound judgment in sensitive or public-facing situations.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible professional experience in public relations, communications, branding, or related areas.
- Professional proficiency in both Korean and English required.
- Ability to draft, edit, and communicate professionally in Korean and English.
- Korean proficiency equivalent to native or near-native fluency preferred.
- Experience managing social media platforms, web content, and media relations.
- Experience working with external agencies, media organizations, or government-related stakeholders.
- Supervisory or team leadership experience preferred.
- Experience in higher education or international organizations preferred.
Pay Bands
- KRW 60,000,000 – 68,000,000 per year, based on relevant prior work experience.
