Main Purpose of Job

A Correctional Maintenance Officer I Plumbing is the entry level of work involving the custody, security and supervision of incarcerated individuals in maintenance and repair work in a correctional environment. Employees in this classification do not supervise other positions.\r\n

POSITION DUTIES

Correctional Maintenance Officer I Plumbing is the entry level of work involving the custody, security and supervision of incarcerated individuals in maintenance and repair work in a correctional environment. Employees in this classification do not supervise other positions. Employees in this classification receive close supervision from a Correctional Maintenance Officer Supervisor.�Employees are subject to call-in during emergencies and staffing shortages. Work is performed in and around a correctional facility, and employees are continually exposed to�incarcerated individuals�who may be abusive and hostile and have access to potentially dangerous tools and equipment. When assigned to outside maintenance jobs, employees are exposed to all types of weather conditions. Employees may be required to physically subdue and restrain�incarcerated individuals�during fights, riots and escape attempts. The work may require moving objects weighing over 25 pounds.\r\nIncarcerated Individuals�Supervision: Maintains control and discipline among�incarcerated individuals�workers; conducts searches for contraband items; administers verbal or written disciplinary actions to�incarcerated individuals�for any violations of conduct standards. Enforces safety, sanitary, custody and security rules and regulations. Physically restrains�incarcerated individuals�if necessary during fights or escape attempts. Maintains continual count of�incarcerated individuals�assigned to work details supervised. Assigns installation maintenance or repair tasks to designated incarcerated individuals performing at various levels of proficiency in the trade. Train and instructs�incarcerated individuals�regarding methods and techniques, use of tools and equipment, and proper care of tools and equipment. Inspects and approves/disapproves all work performed by�incarcerated individuals�for adherence to quality standards.\r\nAdministrative related functions: Estimates time, materials and supplies needed to conduct assigned maintenance or repair tasks. Orders supplies and materials needed. Keeps records of supplies and materials used; inventories materials on hand tools in use.\r\nPerformance of Trade – related functions: Personally performs certain installation, maintenance or repair tasks on plumbing infrastructure. Plans and implements appropriate procedures, operates hand and power tools and equipment needed; maintains record of time, supplies and materials required. Escorts third party vendors and inspect completed work assignment.\r\nPerforms other related duties.\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:�� Graduation from an accredited high school�or high school equivalency�certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Correctional Training Commission regulation.\r\nExperience: Two years of plumbing experience. \r\nNotes: \r\n1. The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209, Annotated Code of Maryland. \r\n2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in correctional institutional specialty codes in the criminal justice field of work at a rate of two years of military experience for the required experience. \r\n

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.\r\nEmployees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland prior to permanent appointment. \r\nSome positions in this classification may require employees to acquire the�appropriate Maryland driver’s license to operate motor vehicles for the�transportation of incarcerated individuals or supplies.� \r\nEmployees who have not already done so must complete and successfully pass the Entrance Level Correctional Training Course required for the Maryland Correctional Training Commission certificate during the probationary period. \r\n

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Selection standards for Correctional Officer certification are established by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209 of the Annotated Code of Maryland. These selection criteria are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations Title 12, Subtitle 10, Chapter 01 and include the following: \r\nU.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status \r\nMust be at least 21 years of age \r\nA completed background investigation \r\nOral interview \r\nPhysical examination. \r\nEmployees in this classification are subject to call-in 24 hours a day and, therefore, must provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached. \r\nEmployees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs. \r\n

SELECTION PROCESS

Becoming a Correctional Maintenance Officer�requires that a recruit completes the Entry Level Training Program at the Training Academy through the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC), at one of our regional locations throughout the state of Maryland. Upon successful graduation from the Academy, individuals will be assigned to facilities throughout the state of Maryland.� This recruitment will be used to fill vacancies throughout the State of Maryland.�\r\nPlease indicate on your application all the counties in the state of Maryland where you are willing to accept employment. Candidates will remain on the certified eligible list for a period of two years.�\r\n\r\nPlease make sure that you provide sufficient information on your application to show that you meet the qualifications for this recruitment.�All information concerning your qualifications must be submitted by the closing date.�We will not consider information submitted after this date.�Successful candidates placed on the�eligible (employment) list for at least one year.\r\nCommon Disqualifiers\r\nPrior Drug Use-�The Commission may not certify an applicant to a mandated position if the applicant has within a 12 month period immediately preceding the date of hire, unlawfully used natural cannabis or natural cannabinoids.�\r\nArrest Records-�No felony convictions;� No misdemeanor convictions within five (5) years; No probations before judgement or parole and probation within five (5) years;� Must not currently be on parole or probation; No civil drug convictions within three (3) years.�\r\nDriving Records-�No convictions or probations before judgement on any 12-point violation within five (5) years. Including but not limited to driving under the influence, driving while intoxicated, attempting to flee/ elude police and/or driving while license is refused / suspended / revoked /canceled.\r\nAcademy-�Must meet the guidelines for certification by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission.\r\nMilitary records-�No separations less than honorable.\r\n
