Anticipated openings for the\r\n2025-2026 School Year.\r\n\r\n\r\nThe Maryland School\r\nfor the Deaf (MSD) is a diverse, bilingual community who in partnership with\r\nfamilies, provides an equitable and exemplary education in a nurturing,\r\nengaging, and challenging environment to ensure our students achieve personal\r\nexcellence and become lifelong learners.\r\n\r\n\r\nWe are currently accepting\r\napplications to create a pool of qualified individuals who can work on an as\r\nneeded basis to temporarily continue the lessons planned for the children on\r\nany given day.\r\n

Main Purpose of Job
Substitute teaching assignments may change based on the needs of the school. A substitute teacher may be asked to accept assignments outside his/her background or educational training. They may also be asked to cover classes during a planning period. It is not expected that a substitute teacher be able to teach new or unfamiliar materials, but rather make every attempt to follow the lesson plan and manage student behavior in the most positive way possible.\r\n
POSITION DUTIES
Follow the lesson plan left by the teacher and ensure students complete\r\nall assigned tasks, maintain a safe environment, keep students under direct\r\nsupervision at all times, leave information concerning the day's activities for\r\nthe teacher, and maintain strict confidentiality of students and school\r\npersonnel information.\r\n
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High School diploma,�plus 60 college credits, or a verified former Howard County�teacher.\r\n\r\n\r\nFluency in American Sign Language and written English\r\nrequired.\r\n
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree preferred.�Experience\r\nworking with a diverse student population including underserved students,\r\nstrong classroom management skills, and knowledge of the Deaf Community\r\npreferred.\r\n
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
New hires are subject\r\nto a criminal background investigation at their own expense.� (Maryland\r\nCode, Family Law Article 1, Sections 5-560-568)\r\n\r\n\r\nCandidates will need to\r\nprovide three letters of recommendation.\r\n

BENEFITS
\r\n\r\nContractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.\r\nLeave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.\r\n\r\n\r\n
