In partnership with families and\r\ncommunities, we empower students to think critically and develop a sense of\r\nself and belonging.\r\n\r\n\r\nThis is a 12-month position in the maintenance department\r\nof the Maryland School for the Deaf – Frederick Campus. This position is\r\ndesignated as Essential Personnel.\r\n

Main Purpose of Job
The Maintenance Mechanic Senior performs advanced level of work for the maintenance of buildings and agency grounds. Assigns and leads maintenance tasks to semi-skilled and unskilled workers. Conducts final inspections of work performed by semi-skilled staff to ensure compliance with safety standards and trade pest practices. Performs general maintenance tasks such as construction, preventative maintenance, improvements and minor repairs to buildings, fixtures and mechanical equipment, grounds and roadways. Calculates material requirements and estimates labor time for repair projects; maintains detailed maintenance logs and equipment history records.\r\n
POSITION DUTIES
\r\nPerforms scheduled maintenance and minor repairs on\r\ncritical building systems, including HVAC, boilers, and pumps. This role\r\ninvolves technical upkeep, such as lubricating components and replacing\r\nfilters, while maintaining clean mechanical spaces. Conducts daily inspections\r\nof the physical plant and utility operations to ensure equipment reliability\r\nand a safe environment for all facility occupants.\r\n\r\n\r\nPerforms plumbing and heating repairs, including repairing\r\nfixtures, unclogging drains, and replacing lavatory hardware. Diagnoses complex\r\nsystem failures, identifies root causes, and leads semi-skilled workers in\r\nequipment installations and repairs to ensure proper facility operation.\r\n\r\n\r\nPerform carpentry repairs including but not limited to\r\nrepair furniture, move, change or construct interior walls, frame drywall,\r\nhinge doors, replace windows and window panes, install cabinets. Apply finish\r\nand/or paint to completed projects.\r\n\r\n\r\nPerform masonry functions to interior or exterior\r\nfunctions which may include repairs to cracks and imperfections in sheetrock,\r\nblock walls, concrete slabs, concrete walkways and asphalt paving.\r\n\r\n\r\nPerforms advanced electrical troubleshooting using\r\nvoltmeters and ohmmeters to interpret circuitry issues. Check voltage polarity\r\nand assist with troubleshooting electrical wiring problems. Assist with the\r\ninstallation of new electrical conduit, wiring and switches.� Leads and assists semi-skilled and unskilled\r\nworkers with electrical installation, repairs and troubleshooting.\r\n\r\n\r\nPerform ground maintenance functions which may include\r\nmowing, trimming, pruning, planting, mulching, weeding and watering. Clean\r\nwalkways, building surfaces, window wells, gutters. Snow and ice removal.\r\nMaintain and service equipment.\r\n\r\n\r\nMay inspect buildings and grounds for adherence to\r\ninstitutional safety and sanitary regulations.\r\n\r\n\r\nTrains, assigns work, inspects and provides immediate\r\nguidance and assistance to team members (semi-skilled employees).\r\n\r\n\r\nPerform other duties that may be required and/or as\r\ndirected.\r\n\r\n\r\n
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
\r\nEducation: Eighth grade.\r\n\r\n\r\nExperience: Four years of experience in any combination of the maintenance trades, three years must be in the trades of electricity, plumbing, steam fitting, refrigeration or air conditioning.\r\n\r\n\r\nNotes:\r\n1. Candidates may substitute additional experience in any of the maintenance trades on a year-for-year basis for up to three years of the required education.\r\n\r\n\r\n2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a degree from an accredited vocational or technical high school with a major in Building Maintenance or a related field�for up to three years of the required general experience.\r\n\r\n\r\n3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in utilities repair�classifications or construction and engineering specialty codes in�any combination of maintenance trades, on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.\r\n\r\n\r\n
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Prior experience in facilities maintenance and/or trade\r\nexperience.\r\n\r\n\r\nWilling to learn American Sign Language.\r\n\r\n\r\nAble to lift 50 lbs. or more.\r\n\r\n\r\nAble to assist with snow removal on the campus.\r\n
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.\r\n
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
\r\nNew hires are subject to a criminal background\r\ninvestigation at their own expense. (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1,\r\nSections 5-560-568)\r\n\r\n\r\nCandidates will need to provide three letters of\r\nrecommendation.\r\n\r\n\r\n
