Main Purpose of Job
This position is the supervisory level of work involving the security and care of patients at Maryland Department of Health (MDH) facilities where care is provided to offenders, patients, or residents with behavioral health diagnoses who have been judged not criminally responsible for committing felonies; and to those who are too violent for a regular hospital or residential setting and who have been deemed dangerous to themselves or others. This position supervises lower-level Security Attendants. This position receives general supervision from a Security Attendant Manager I. This position is assigned to day, evening, night or rotating shifts. This position is subject to call in during emergencies and staffing shortages. This position may be required to move and position patients or apply physical restraints.\r\n\r\n\r\nThis position is evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology. The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of the class specification.\r\nThis position is differentiated from Security Attendant III in that the Security Attendant Supervisor has supervisory responsibility for lower-level Security Attendants in a specific area while the Security Attendant III assigns, reviews and approves the work of and trains lower-level Security Attendants. This position is differentiated from Security Attendant Manager I in that Security Attendant Manager I is responsible for the overall security operations of an assigned shift in a maximum security MDH facility and has supervisory responsibility for Security Attendant Supervisors.�\r\n\r\n\r\nEXAMPLES OF WORK�\r\n\r\n\r\n Supervises lower-level Security Attendants at a MDH facility\r\n Supervises the control of persons and property by enforcing safety and security regulations\r\n Supervises the inspection and search of patients, visitors, wards, grounds, work locations and other areas for unauthorized objects or materials\r\n Supervises security checks of detention screens, doors, locks, tools, equipment, utensils, medications or other items that may present a security problem\r\n Checks and controls the use of handcuffs, restraining belts and emergency tear gas equipment\r\n Ensures that lower-level Security Attendants receive proper on the job training and identifies performance problems that could be alleviated by additional training\r\n Recommends changes to procedures and regulations to enhance security\r\n May supervise security checks of tools and equipment at end of shop period\r\n May supervise the conduct of patients and visitors in the visiting area\r\n Performs other related duties\r\n\r\n\r\n
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:���High School diploma or high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Correctional Training Commission regulation. \r\nExperience: Three years of experience providing security to patients or inmates or youths committed by courts to psychiatric hospitals, correctional facilities or juvenile detention centers. \r\nNotes:\r\n1. The above educational requirement is set by the Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209 of the Annotated Code of Maryland.\r\n2.�Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military�service experience as a non-commissioned officer�in Correctional Officer/Specialist classifications or Internment/ Resettlement�Specialist and Correctional specialty codes in the security field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.\r\n
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The desired candidate should possess the following:\r\n\r\n\r\n Experience preparing concise and accurate reports of events and situations with strong report writing skills\r\n Experience training and supervising employees and evaluating their performance and analytical mindset\r\n Experience in MDH facility policies and security measures\r\n\r\n\r\n

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland. \r\n
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Employees who have not already done so must meet the selection standards required and successfully complete the training prescribed by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission for a Correctional Officer during their probationary period, (Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209). Selection standards for Correctional Officer training are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations Title 12, Subtitle 10, Chapter 01 and include the following:\r\nU.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status\r\nMust be at least 21 years of age\r\nA completed background investigation\r\nOral interview\r\nPhysical examination. \r\n2. Employees in this classification will be required to provide the facility with a telephone number where they can be reached. \r\n3. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs. \r\n
