Nature of Work
The fundamental reason this job exists is to\r\nmaintain and safely operate fire apparatus. This is skilled work in responding\r\nto fire alarms and fire emergencies and operating the fire apparatus at\r\nemergency scenes. Duties also include conducting and participating in\r\ncontinuing education and in-service on firefighting techniques, and lifesaving\r\nprocedures, presenting training programs and drills for subordinates, companies\r\nor recruits, and performing or assigning public service activities, performing\r\nsafety and operational inspections on vehicles and equipment, assigning the\r\nupkeep and maintenance of the apparatus, preparing reports and performing other\r\nrelated administrative tasks. A Fire Sergeant reports directly to a company\r\nofficer who provides general supervision. At emergency incidents, the Sergeant\r\nis under the command of any officer of higher rank.�\r\n
Minimum Qualifications
Must possess a valid AL Driver’s license and have (3) years’ experience and all\r\nminimum qualifications of a Firefighter at Montgomery Fire/Rescue.� Additional requirements include Instructor I state certification; Apparatus Operator (Pumper and Aerial Ladder), NFA ICS 300 and 400 classes; and Fireground Operations (Pumper\r\nCompany and Ladder Company) classes by the first day of the\r\nAssessment Center.\r\n\r\n\r\nADDITIONAL DIVISION REQUIREMENTS:�\r\nINSPECTIONS BUREAU:� Must have obtained Fire Inspector I or Fire\r\nInspector certification from the Alabama Fire College.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nINVESTIGATIONS BUREAU:� Must have obtained Investigator I\r\ncertification from the Alabama Fire College.\r\nMust complete R0772 Fire Investigation Essentials within 12 months after\r\nassignment to the Investigations Bureau.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nNOTE:� For\r\nALS Pumper and Medic Truck Sergeant vacancies requiring a Paramedics License,\r\nthose applicants who possess an EMT III Paramedics State License will be given\r\npreference.\r\n\r\n
Special Requirements
PHYSICAL ABILITIES: \r\n\r\n\r\nPhysical\r\nability to walk or run up to two miles in the time frame required by department\r\nregulations.�\r\n\r\n\r\nPhysical\r\nability to perform firefighting tasks while wearing breathing apparatus and\r\nturn out gear weighing up to 50 pounds.��\r\n\r\n\r\nPhysical\r\nability to lift, carry, or drag equipment or victims weighing up to 175 pounds,\r\nwith or without assistance, to perform firefighting and rescue operations.��\r\n\r\n\r\nPhysical\r\nability to participate in daily physical conditioning and strength program as\r\nrequired by department rules and regulations.���\r\n\r\n\r\nPhysical\r\nability to pass annual job task assessment within 9.5 minutes as required by\r\ndepartment rules and regulations.��\r\n\r\n\r\nPhysical\r\nability to visualize fire scene information such as hydrant color, smoke color,\r\ndistances between buildings and amount of flames in order to determine\r\nappropriate commands and orders.\r\n\r\n

How to apply\r\n\r\nComplete an online application by visiting Montgomery Personnel Board's Online Employment Center. Paper applications are no longer accepted. Completed applications will be accepted online until 11:59 p.m. on the closing date. If there is no closing date, the announcement may be closed at any time without prior notice.��\r\n\r\n\r\nPurpose of examination���\r\nThe purpose of the exam is to establish an employment register to fill any vacancies for the classification that may occur over the life of the register.� If there are less than five qualified applicants, an examination will not be administered.� All candidates will be placed on the employment list.���\r\n\r\n\r\nExamination dates�\r\nAll exercises of the selection procedure for the classification are scheduled for June 11th and 12th, 2026�at Station #5. �Qualified candidates who apply to compete in the selection process will be notified in writing of specific dates, times, and locations at which to appear for the selection process.���\r\n\r\n\r\nExamination orientation���\r\nAn orientation session will be held to familiarize candidates with the examination.� All qualifying candidates will have the opportunity to attend this session.� The sessions will be held on May 27 or May 28, 2026 at 10 A.M. at the Montgomery Personnel Board office, located on 27 Madison Avenue. The orientation session is not mandatory.� A candidate orientation guide will be distributed at the meeting.� If you do not attend the orientation, you may obtain a guide after the date of the orientation at the front desk of the Montgomery Personnel Board office.�\r\n\r\n\r\nExamination description�\r\nThe Fire Sergeant Exam is a two-part process in which eligible candidates will:�\r\n\r\n1) answer multiple-choice Written Exam questions regarding required job knowledge and\r\n2) participate in several Work Sample (skills) exercises resembling skills in which they may be called upon to perform in emergency situations.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nCandidates are observed and evaluated in these situations or simulation exercises by trained assessors in a fair and impartial fashion.�\r\n\r\n\r\nPerformance dimensions�\r\nThe Fire Sergeant Exam is based on a thorough job analysis which identifies the important work behaviors and associated knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) required of a Sergeant in Montgomery Fire Rescue.�\r\n\r\n\r\nThese KSAs were clustered into two performance or assessment dimensions:��\r\n1) Operations Knowledge and�2) Operations Skill.�\r\n\r\n\r\nDisqualification from competition�\r\nThe Montgomery Personnel Board and/or expert shall disqualify an applicant or candidate from competition upon determination that:���\r\n\r\n1.� The application was not received by the filing deadline.\r\n2.� The applicant fails to meet the minimum qualifications specified in the announcement.���\r\n3.� The candidate fails to appear at the announced time and place for testing.���\r\n4.� The candidate is found to be cheating.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nCheating involves any attempt by an individual or group to enhance test scores by means other than actual knowledge or ability, including but not limited to, efforts to give or receive information about the test content or correct responses before, after or during a test.�\r\n\r\n\r\nExamples of cheating during a test would be:���\r\n\r\na)��� attempting to gain access to the test under false pretenses\r\nb)� � �failing to follow instructions given by the test administrators or proctors����\r\nc)���� talking to another candidate during the test����\r\nd)� � �removing or attempting to remove test materials from the test site����\r\ne)���� leaving the testing room, holding room, or other location without permission from the test administrator\r\nf)����� attempting to use notes, handheld computers or calculators when instructed not to\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

This position is open only to Montgomery Fire Rescue employees who have completed their probationary period and meet the minimum qualifications.\r\n
