Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this\r\nclassification exists is to perform manual and semi-skilled labor in the installation\r\nand maintenance of traffic control signs and/or pavement markings. Position\r\nincumbents spend a majority of their time performing labor-intensive duties;\r\nonce proficient at these duties, incumbents are trained on the skilled aspects\r\nof the job, including performing traffic control sign and striping layout, the\r\nrules and guidelines governing traffic control signs and striping, and the\r\noperation of striping and sign construction equipment.� Position incumbents are primarily assigned to\r\neither the Street Striping subdivision or the Signing subdivision and perform\r\nthe duties associated with that subdivision; however, all position incumbents\r\nare cross-trained on the duties of both subdivisions and can be utilized as\r\nneeded.� Primary work\r\nresponsibilities may include: preparing road surfaces for painting; setting up\r\nand tearing down barricades and safety cones; assisting in the installation and\r\nrevitalization of traffic control pavement markings; assisting in the\r\ninstallation, removal, replacement, and maintenance of street and traffic\r\ncontrol signs; operating, as training allows, center line and hand striping\r\nmachines, thermoplastic machines and melting kettles, cold laid plastic\r\nmachines, bituminous machines, and core hole drills; assisting in the construction\r\nof street and traffic control signs; and performing\r\nadditional duties in service to the department.\r\nIncumbents work on crews ranging from two to six workers and receive\r\nonsite direction from Traffic Maintenance Worker IIs and IIIs.� Position incumbents are supervised by a\r\nTraffic Maintenance Supervisor.\r\n

Minimum Qualifications

High\r\nschool diploma or GED and six months of experience installing striping,\r\ninstalling raised pavement markers, installing traffic signs, and/or\r\nmanufacturing street, traffic regulator, construction, and portable signs.\r\n

Special Requirements

Must\r\nhave and maintain a valid driver’s license and insurable driving record.�\r\n\r\n\r\nPHYSICAL ABILITIES: Physical\r\nability to walk on asphalt surfaces for distances of up to 5 miles in one day\r\nin order to assist with paint striping and sign operations. Physical ability\r\nto stoop, crouch, bend and kneel in order to assist with equipment operation\r\nand maintenance, loading or unloading equipment, and preparing surfaces for\r\nstriping and signing operations. Physical ability to lift, carry,\r\npull, and push equipment or materials weighing up to 50 pounds without\r\nassistance. Physical ability to lift, carry,\r\npull and push equipment or materials weighing up to 150 pounds with assistance. Physical ability to frequently climb\r\ninto and out of the bed of truck in order to secure tools or materials, install\r\nor remove sign posts, and clean road signs. Physical ability to lift and strike\r\na sign post with a 16 pound sledge hammer using hand-eye coordination and\r\nphysical strength.�\r\n\r\n\r\nWORK CONDITIONS: Work\r\nperformed involves a moderate to extensive amount of manual labor.� Work is performed in a variety of\r\nweather conditions with exposure to the elements to include direct sun\r\nexposure, extreme heat and/or cold, rain, and lightning.� Work includes exposure to strong fumes from\r\nsolvents, paints, and other chemicals. Work involves frequent use of metal,\r\nglass, bituminous, and other materials which may cause frequent cuts,\r\nabrasions, and bruises.� Work is\r\nperformed in a variety of uncontrolled work environments including but not\r\nlimited to: in close proximity to heavy traffic traveling at various rates of\r\nspeed; in unkempt areas with tall weeds and potentially poisonous plants; and\r\nexposure to ants, bees, insects, and other local wildlife. Work requires some\r\nextended work hours, overtime, night, weekend, and holiday hours as well as\r\nafterhours on-call duty.\r\n\r\n

Kind of Examination
