Starting Hourly Rate $32.28.  MSU Benefits - Free comprehensive health care for you and your family as well as a 10% contribution toward your retirement; Generous sick, vacation, personal and holiday time; Not eligible to work a remote schedule. Regular in-person attendance is required to meet business and customer needs.
 
This position performs advanced diagnostics, maintenance, repair, modification, and overhaul of MSU fleet vehicles and heavy‑duty/specialty equipment, including waste and recycling trucks, roll‑off trucks, buses, loaders, forklifts, utility vehicles, golf carts, and side‑by‑sides. Responsibilities include providing repair estimates, coordinating with vendors, performing welding and fabrication work, delivering preventive‑maintenance training, offering customer support, and responding to field breakdowns.
 
Further breakdown of job responsibilities is as follows:
40%: Perform safety inspections, diagnostics, maintenance, repair, and overhaul on recycling trucks, buses, automotive, diesel, hybrid, electric, and heavy‑duty/special equipment.
 
20%: Provide customer service, repair estimates, and technical consultation; communicate best‑practice repair options.
 
20%: Manage parts ordering, vendor coordination, and inventory; maintain accurate repair documentation.
 
10%: Conduct preventive maintenance training; assist in equipment specification reviews.
 
10%: Support workflow processes; oversee garage operations when required; correspondence through email, training, meetings and professional development.

Requirements

Completion of high school education or an equivalent combination of technical training and experience; Successful completion of an applicable trade-specific Trades Helper program, or completion of an approved apprenticeship program, or an associate degree, or equivalent education/experience; Eight years of experience in the trade; Possession of a Michigan Master Automotive Mechanic License; Possession of a Michigan Master Heavy Duty Truck Mechanic License; Ability to perform work to accepted industry standards; Expert knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the trade; Expert knowledge of applicable codes, rules, and regulations (local, state, and federal); Possession of a valid Michigan Commercial Driver's License and medical certificate. Obtainment of the applicable CDL endorsement (P – passenger bus) upon completion of the probationary/trial period.

Associate degree in automotive technology or advanced technical training; Expertise in diesel systems, drivability diagnostics, electrical repair, welding/fabrication, and heavy‑duty systems; Experience with waste/recycling collection and processing equipment; commitment to sustainability; Strong communication, teamwork, and problem‑solving skills.
