The New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) is an umbrella policy and advocacy organization for nearly 200 groups in New York State. We envision a New York state that is stronger because all people are welcome, treated fairly, and given the chance to pursue their dreams. Our mission is to unite immigrants, members, & allies so all New Yorkers can thrive. We represent the collective interests of New York’s diverse immigrant communities and organizations and devise solutions to advance them; advocate for laws, policies, and programs that lead to justice and opportunity for all immigrant groups; and build the power of immigrants and the organizations that serve them to ensure their sustainability, to improve people’s lives, and to strengthen our state.

The Manager of Organizing and Strategy, NYC will work closely with the Advocacy Department to grow the organization’s statewide presence, deepen the engagement of NYC-based members and partners in NYIC initiatives, and build the political power of immigrant communities, the organizations who serve them, and strengthen the NYIC’s advocacy efforts. They are expected to join regional working groups, task forces and events.

The Manager is charged with assessing the regional needs for local members/partners’ assets and issues in the community to better inform NYIC’s resources and campaigns. This position will lead the NYIC’s efforts in New York City and work closely with NYIC member organizations across all five boroughs. You will convene and mobilize regional member and partner organizations, lead NYIC advocacy efforts in New York City, and serve as a link to key resources for member agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Lead engagement of NYIC member organizations in NYC to play a leadership role in advocacy and organizing campaigns.
  • Engage member organizations in local convenings across the state.
  • Assist in developing and implementing local and state advocacy campaign strategies.
  • Build and strengthen relationships with NYIC members, immigrant-focused organizations, allies and diverse partners across New York City.
  • Regularly convene members and partners to address issues affecting immigrant communities and plan strategies in the region and statewide for collective action.
  • Coordinate and mobilize member agencies and coalition partners around local, state, and federal advocacy campaigns, including rapid response initiatives.
  • Plan and organize local, statewide and federal events including rallies, actions, convenings, trainings, and community forums.
  • Forge relationships with policymakers in the New York City metropolitan area, including elected and other key government stakeholders, providing guidance and insight on local issues to support NYIC’s advocacy efforts in the New York City metropolitan area.
  • Support advocacy efforts by identifying and preparing partners and affected community members for social media and press opportunities.
  • Serve as spokesperson for the NYIC, including in the media and through public speaking and regular meetings with community leaders, policy makers, and thought leaders.
  • Occasionally carries and moves materials weighing 50 lbs or less.
  • 3-5 years of relevant professional experience in community organizing, advocacy, or related fields, preferably in New York City.
  • Deep commitment and understanding of social justice, immigrant justice, and NYC’s diverse immigrant communities.
  • Experience collaborating with multiple, diverse partners to advance shared goals.
  • Experience with community organizing and/or policy advocacy is an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including communication skills, and comfort with public speaking and meeting facilitation.
  • Collaborative team player with the ability to take initiative, manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment, and adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Proficiency in Spanish or another language spoken in immigrant communities in NYC is required.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • G-Suite/Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Salesforce
  • Must be legally authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.
