Job Summary:

 

Founded in 1981, Old Dominion Insulation is looking for a skilled insulator to install, repair, and maintain insulation systems on piping, ductwork, equipment, and mechanical systems in industrial and commercial construction environments.

 

Because many projects are performed on government sites, candidates must be able to pass a background check to gain access to the government-based site.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature and scope of work being performed by this position. This is not a complete listing, and other duties will be assigned based on the position’s role within the business unit. 

  • Install, remove, or repair insulation on ductwork, plumbing, HVAC piping, and other mechanical equipment. 
  • Assess the scope of the job, accurately complete a material take-off, and follow contract documents to determine insulation types, thicknesses, and installation requirements.  
  • Measure and cut various types of insulation to be applied to mechanical and plumbing systems. 
  • Ability to measure, cut, and install metal jacketing around mechanical and plumbing systems.  
  • Clean, prepare, and inspect surfaces prior to installation. 
  • Apply insulation using approved materials and secure using tape, banding, and/or other fasteners. 
  • Operate hand tools and power tools including knives, saws, staple guns, banding tools, drills, and specialty insulation equipment. 
  • Use ladders, lifts, and scaffolding in compliance with fall protection and site safety requirements. 
  • Follow all jobsite safety requirements including PPE, fall protection, respirator use, and hazard communication. 
  • Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and other mandatory training.  
  • Communicate clearly with foremen and construction managers regarding job status, challenges, and changes. 



Minimum Qualifications:

  • This position supports a federal project that requires U.S. citizenship for site access. Applicants must be able to meet this requirement.
  • Prior construction experience preferred; OSHA-10 or -30 certification preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work extended hours as needed.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to multitask.
  • Ability to read contract drawings and specifications.
  • Valid driver’s license if required to operate a company vehicle.
  • Authorized to work in the United States.
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Experience using hand and power tools.
  • Commitment to safety and team collaboration.
  • Able to pass screening requirements.

 

 

Preferred Experience:

  • Commercial insulation
  • Bilingual (Spanish and English) [referred but not required

 

Physical Requirements:

 

  • Able to work in an industrial plant environment 
  • Able to work in an indoor or outdoor construction work environment with potential exposure to dust, noise, waste, toxic and infectious materials and possible inclement weather conditions. 
  • Able to walk, sit, stand, bend, kneel, stretch, squat and climb, and work in confined, tight, and awkward spaces. 
  • Ability to reach overhead for extended periods when insulating piping, ductwork, or elevated equipment. 
  • Firm grasping and fine manipulation required.   
  • Strong hand-eye coordination to measure, cut, fit, and secure insulation materials. 
  • Capable of performing repetitive physical tasks for extended periods, including but not limited to cutting and wrapping materials and securing insulation.  
  • Ability to hear verbal instructions and warning signals over ambient noise. 
  • Must maintain situational awareness around moving equipment, overhead work, and active construction zones. 
  • Able to wear required personal protective equipment. 
  • Able to work with specialized construction equipment, tools, and materials including regular use of knives, saws, banding tools, staple guns, and other hand/power tools. 
  • Able to see, talk and hear in person, via phone and/or through online/video.  
  • Able to use hands and fingers in a manner that allows for use of a keyboard and phone.  
  • Able to lift & carry items up to 50 lbs. 
  • Push/pull tools and material carts weighing up to 100 lbs. 
  • Able to climb up, work from and climb down step ladders or extension ladders.
