This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Instructs children in developmentally appropriate activities designed to promote social, emotional, physical, intellectual, and creative growth in the Rising Leaders Program.  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  1. Alwaysmaintainsappropriate ratioand supervision by sightwith heightened awareness in at risk areas including outdoor/gymtime.
  2. Maintains and promotes a safeand positive environment.
  3. Respectschildrenalwaysinteractat their eye level, showing a warm, caring, pleasant demeanor.
  4. Knows the names of children, parents, family members and uses their names when speaking with them.
  5. Organizes and effectively prepares daily lesson plans for each group of children. Adjust lessons to fitindividualneeds of each child.
  6. Plans and implements individual and group activities to stimulate growth in language, reading, math, science, social and motor skills as well as emotional development and creative ability.
  7. Oversee all classroom management including set up and clean-up ofactivities.
  8. Assistwith homework help or academic support as needed. 
  9. Instructs children in practices of personal cleanliness,self-careand responsibility for their belongings and theschools/programequipment.
  10. Helps children form habits of caring forownclothing, picking up and putting away suppliesand equipment.
  1. Presents a professional manner through a neat and clean appearance. FollowsYMCA dress code.
  2. Communicatewithappropriate schoolstaff when needed. 
  3. NotifiesTeenDirectorconcerning any need for repairs with building,classroom,suppliesor equipment.
  4. Maintains positive relations with parents, families, and other staff. Models’relationship-building skills in all interactions.
  5. Effectively communicates daily with parents/guardians/families through verbal and written means.
  6. Monitors andmaintainaccuraterecords including attendance, absenteeism, transitions, childguidanceand incidents for each child inclassroom. Maintains confidentiality of all children, parents, and staff members.
  7. NotifiesTeenDirectorconcerning any need for repairs with building,classroom,suppliesor equipment.
  8. Supervises and evaluates Associate Teachers. 
  9. Supervises Ivy Tech, Ball State or otherpracticumstudents and student teachers.
  10. Communicates toTeenDirectorany concerns or incidents that require follow-up.
  11. Supports Annual Campaign and otherfund-raisingactivities. 
  12. Iscourteous and gives sincere attention to others by answering questions and troubleshooting issues.
  13. Knows and administers theappropriate EAP(emergency action procedures) for any situation, including first aid or CPR, child injuries or medical issues, and work-related employee injuries, etc.
  14. Completes incident and accident reports asrequired.
  15. Upholdguidelines as outlined in the Employee Handbook of the Association.
  16. Attenddesignated meetings, workshops, andtraining. 
  17. Carries out other duties as assigned byTeenDirector.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Education and Certifications  

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Associate’sdegreein a child-related field or CDA credential isrequired.
  • New Employee Orientation, Child Care Child Abuse Prevention, BloodbornePathogens and CommunicableDisease within30daysof hire to be refreshed every year. 
  • Adult/Infant CPR/AED, First Aidrequiredbefore employment (counted in ratios) and kept current. 
  • Basic knowledge and communication to engage with children and families. 

Experience 

  • One (1) to three (3) years ofpreviousexperience in working with children in licensed and/or NAEYC accredited center required. Experience in supervising others preferred.  
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license, insurable driver’s record according to the YMCA’s insurance carriers, and have reliable transportation to travel for business meetings, training events, YMCA site visits,vendorsand suppliers, etc.
  • Computer skillsneeded, particularly with Microsoft Office and email applications, along withabilityto learn the internal YMCA software.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The incumbent is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.  Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  Also required is frequent hearing and talking, in person and on the telephone. Time is spent both indoors and outdoors.  The condition of the air is normal/average air conditioned/ventilated.  The noise level is normal to loud within an active YMCA program environment.  Must have passed a physical examination conducted within the past 12 months prior to beginnning work.
