Job Summary

The emergency medical technician (EMT) provides basic life support and patient care at the direction of the paramedic prior to interhospital and intrahospital transport and is responsible for safe operation of the ambulance vehicle during transit. The EMT will follow all the standards of care as established by Indiana Department of Homeland Security - EMS Division, and the Riverview Health EMS Medical Director(s). 

Job Responsibilities

  • Assist to provide care to patients during inter-facility transport, including but not limited to: Basic first aid (splinting, wound care, etc.), obtaining vital signs, managing non-invasive airway support
  • Prepare patients for safe transport to the destination facility
  • Operate ambulance vehicle safely and in accordance with all state and local traffic laws
  • Collaborate with medical director(s), Riverview Health interdisciplinary teams, and Organizational Improvement to ensure optimal patient outcomes and enhancement of the patient experience
  • Communicate effectively with patients and their families as well as other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team
  • Maintain readiness of ambulance vehicle at all times, to include sufficient medical oxygen, functioning of equipment, and stocking of supplies
  • Participate in ongoing education and performance improvement initiatives as required by state law and/or as assigned by hospital management
  • Other duties as assigned

Education Requirements

  • Minimum: Completion of state-certified EMT program

License/Certification Requirements

Minimum: 

  • Current EMT Certification
  • Basic Life Support Program (BLS) Provider
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Provider
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Provider
  • Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) – Must have or obtain within 6 months of hire
  • Valid Indiana Driver’s license and driving record that meets organizational requirements to drive a RVH owned vehicle

Experience Requirements

Required: 

  • None

Preferred: 

  • One (1) year of experience as an EMT with an ambulance service
