The Director of Accounting is responsible for the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of the company's financial records and reporting. This leader oversees the general ledger, close process, technical accounting, and internal controls, and manages and develops the accounting team. The role partners closely with finance leadership, operations, and external advisors to support the organization's strategic and financial objectives.
This is a high-visibility leadership role reporting to senior finance leadership, with ownership of financial reporting, close, controls, and team development.
Responsibilities of Position:
- Directs the accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and collections functions through subordinate managers, setting priorities, performance standards
- Owns the three-to-five-year roadmap for the accounting function, including organizational design, capability building, and the systems and process architecture needed to support growth and acquisition activity
- Builds and administers the accounting function's operating budget, including headcount, external audit and advisory fees, and systems and automation spend
- Sets the company's accounting positions on non-routine matters where authoritative guidance requires interpretation
- Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process, ensuring accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with U.S. GAAP
- Own the general ledger, consolidations, and preparation of internal and external financial reporting
- Oversee technical accounting matters, including revenue recognition, leases, fixed assets, and complex or non-routine transactions, and maintain supporting documentation
- Establish, maintain, and continuously improve internal controls over financial reporting; identify and remediate process gaps
- Manage the annual audit and coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, and other third parties
- Deliver financial reporting packages, variance analysis, and insights to senior leadership and ownership
- Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, regulatory requirements, and company policies
- Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team; build structure, accountability, and bench strength across all functional areas
- Drive system, process, and automation improvements to increase efficiency and scalability
- Perform other duties as assigned

Skills & Abilities Needed for Position:
- Experience leading and developing accounting teams across multiple functional areas (AP, AR, GL, collections)
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
- Public accounting experience combined with private industry experience preferred
- Experience in a multi-entity or multi-location organization
- Executive presence and the ability to communicate with leadership and ownership
- Strong technical judgment paired with practical, business-oriented decision-making
- Team builder who develops talent and drives accountability
- Process- and improvement-oriented
- High integrity and discretion with confidential information
Experience & Knowledge Needed for Position:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 4+ years in a leadership or management capacity required
- Strong technical knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting required, ERP implementation/optimization experience perferred
- Demonstrated experience owning the close process and managing external audits and proven experience building and improving internal controls
Physical Requirements in a Regular Workday:
- Rarely lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 10 lbs
- Rarely working outside in changing temperatures, wet/humid conditions
- Rarely working in areas of dust, odors, mist, gases, and other airborne matter
- Rarely stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling
- Frequently sitting/standing/walking
Additional Working Conditions/Aspects:
- Possible exposure to high traffic conditions and/or tight driving areas
- Ability to travel between offices, as required
- Ability to work flexible hours; expected to work nights and weekends as needed
- Legally eligible to work in the United States
- Valid driver’s license (if applicable)
- Must successfully complete pre-employment testing
- Must be able to read and speak the English language
