OtherQuantum Engineer

Silicon Quantum Computing (SQC) is at the forefront of global efforts to build the world’s first commercial-scale quantum computer, while delivering quantum-enhanced AI and simulation products to customers today.

Backed by over 25 years of technological excellence, SQC is a full-stack quantum computing company that leverages its proprietary manufacturing process to engineer atomic qubits in silicon with 0.13 nanometer precision. It is the most precise semiconductor manufacturing in the world, enabling systems with world-leading algorithmic fidelity, and a decisive advantage in the global quantum computing race.

Our products are commercially deployed and generating revenue. Watermelon, our quantum-enhanced AI system, is delivering superior results on real-world problems across energy, telecom and finance. Quantum Twins, our simulation platform, provides unparalleled ability to model quantum systems, accelerating molecule and materials discovery.

This is SQC: building the future of computing while delivering quantum impact today.

About the Role

~1 min read

We are hiring a Senior Quantum Engineer to lead the advanced benchmarking and optimisation of SQC’s scaled silicon multi-qubit processors. You will take ownership of complex experiments from algorithmic benchmarking of multi-qubit devices to quantum error correction (QEC) demonstrations and drive them from concept through to high-quality results. Working alongside the full-stack team, you will help define what the next generations of our processors must achieve and how we prove it. This role suits an accomplished experimentalist with deep multi-qubit experience who wants to shape and deliver the technical roadmap of one of the world’s leading quantum computing efforts.

Responsibilities

~1 min read
  • Lead the design and execution of experiments characterising scaled multi-qubit processors, from device stability measurements to complex benchmarking protocols.
  • Execute quantum algorithms, including state-of-the-art QEC demonstrations.
  • Define performance metrics and validation strategies for current and next-generation processors against roadmap requirements.
  • Drive project-based development of novel device capabilities and measurement capabilities.
  • Benchmark processor performance against theoretical simulations and against reported literature.
  • Contribute to technical strategy, and stay abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies in quantum computing and quantum error correction.
  • PhD in physics, quantum engineering, electrical engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent industrial experience.
  • Demonstrated experience measuring quantum processors with 10+ qubits in academic or industrial environments.
  • Hands-on experience with quantum error correction experiments or benchmarking protocols.
  • Proven track record of leading experimental research projects to completion, evidenced by publications or equivalent industrial outcomes.
  • Proficiency in coding using Python, including for measurement and data analysis.
  • Strong background in analysing and interpreting complex experimental datasets.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to lead and work effectively in multidisciplinary teams with shared ownership of outcomes.
  • Experience with spin qubits in silicon or other semiconductor qubit platforms.
  • Strong background in RF measurement techniques and microwave engineering.
  • Experience supervising or mentoring junior researchers.

For roles at SQC, expect 3-4 interviews, meeting a few members of the team and focusing on your core eligibility for the role, your skills and how they align, and finally your values and how they align. We'll give you a more specific runthrough if you're successful in making it to the first interview.

As part of our obligations to our clients, we require that successful candidates submit to background checks, including a National Police Check, Right to Work checks, as well as employment and qualifications verification. We won't contact anyone until we're confident there's a fit between SQC and yourself.

SQC is an equal opportunity employer. We value diverse perspectives and experiences, and encourage applications from candidates who may not meet every listed requirement. If you’re excited about the role and believe you can contribute, we encourage you to apply.

This position may require access to export-controlled information or technology. Employment may be subject to applicable export control laws and may require eligibility assessment based on factors such as nationality, citizenship, or residency, and, where necessary, obtaining relevant export licenses or approvals.

SQC was founded by renowned physicist and materials scientist Michelle Simmons, who pioneered the field of atomic electronics, including the development of the world’s first single-atom transistor and the first integrated circuit built with atomic precision. Our Chair, Simon Segars, former CEO of Arm, is a leader in the semiconductor industry and was instrumental in developing the processors that powered the mobile computing revolution.

As a full-stack company with in-house QPU manufacturing, SQC can design, produce and test new quantum chips in under a week, enabling rapid iteration and a decisive advantage in the race to build the world’s first commercial-scale quantum computer.

SQC is a high-accountability environment built on a simple principle: Every Atom Counts. If you’re looking to play a meaningful role in building the next frontier of computing, we’d love to hear from you.
