We are seeking a dependable, team-oriented Orderly to support our busy Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC). The Orderly plays an important role in keeping our surgical day running safely and efficiently by providing support to the Operating Room, Pre-Op, and PACU/Recovery areas.

This position is highly active and requires someone who is comfortable working in a fast-paced surgical environment, assisting with patient transport, OR turnover, stocking, equipment movement, supply runs, and other non-clinical duties that support the surgical team.

The ideal candidate is reliable, attentive to detail, physically capable of performing the duties of the position, and willing to jump in wherever needed to support the team.

Responsibilities

Depending on the day's surgical schedule, the Orderly may be responsible for:

    Opening and preparing designated areas before the first case.

    Preparing stretchers and transport equipment.

  • →

    Transporting patients to and from surgical areas.

  • →

    Assisting with OR turnover between cases.

  • →

    Restocking OR, Pre-Op, and PACU supplies.

    Performing supply runs.

  • →

    Transporting specimens according to facility procedures.

  • →

    Moving equipment between departments.

  • →

    Assisting with Pre-Op and PACU room turnover.

  • →

    Preparing recovery bays for incoming patients.

  • →

    Assisting with discharge-related non-clinical tasks.

  • →

    End-of-day cleaning, restocking, and closing duties.

  • Assist with OR room turnover between cases, including removal of used linens, trash, and appropriate supplies and preparation of the room for the next case.

  • Clean and disinfect designated areas and equipment according to ASC policies and infection prevention requirements.

  • Restock OR rooms with commonly used supplies and notify staff when supplies are running low.

  • Assist with moving and positioning stretchers, beds, equipment, and other items as directed.

  • Assist the surgical team with obtaining supplies and equipment needed for scheduled procedures.

  • Perform supply runs between the OR, sterile processing, storage areas, and other departments.

  • Assist with maintaining organized and readily accessible OR supplies.

  • Help prepare the OR and surrounding areas for the first case of the day.

  • Assist with end-of-day OR closing and restocking duties.

  • Report damaged, missing, or malfunctioning equipment to the appropriate staff member.

  • Safely transport patients between Pre-Op, Operating Room, PACU, and other designated areas as directed by nursing staff.

  • Assist with transferring patients between stretchers, beds, and operating room tables using appropriate safe-patient-handling techniques.

  • Ensure patients are transported safely, respectfully, and with appropriate attention to privacy and dignity.

  • Verify with clinical staff that the patient is ready for transport before moving the patient.

  • Assist with positioning and securing patients during transport as directed by licensed clinical staff.

  • Assist Pre-Op staff with preparing patient rooms and bays for scheduled patients.

  • Help keep Pre-Op areas clean, organized, and properly stocked.

  • Transport patients to the Operating Room when directed by nursing staff.

  • Assist with obtaining and delivering supplies and equipment requested by Pre-Op nurses.

  • Assist with room turnover and preparation between patients.

  • Provide non-clinical support to the Pre-Op nursing team as needed.

  • Assist with transporting patients from the Operating Room to PACU/Recovery as directed by nursing and anesthesia staff.

  • Assist with safe patient transfers and positioning under the direction of licensed clinical staff.

  • Keep PACU/recovery areas clean, organized, and stocked.

  • Assist with turnover and preparation of recovery bays between patients.

  • Obtain and transport supplies and equipment requested by PACU staff.

  • Assist with transporting discharged patients to designated areas when appropriate and directed by staff.

  • Provide non-clinical support to the PACU nursing team as needed.

  • Deliver supplies, equipment, medications, specimens, paperwork, and other items to the appropriate department or designated location as directed and in accordance with facility policy.

  • Transport surgical specimens according to established ASC procedures, including proper identification, handling, and delivery requirements.

  • Assist with stocking supply rooms, ORs, Pre-Op, PACU, and other designated areas.

  • Monitor designated supply areas and communicate low-stock items to the appropriate staff.

  • Assist with receiving, moving, and organizing supplies as needed.

  • Help maintain appropriate inventory organization and PAR levels as directed.

  • Move equipment throughout the facility while maintaining a safe environment.

  • Follow all ASC infection prevention and control policies.

  • Follow proper procedures for cleaning, disinfecting, and handling equipment and patient-care areas.

  • Properly handle and dispose of trash, linens, and regulated waste according to facility policy.

  • Follow appropriate procedures for transporting contaminated items and equipment.

  • Maintain clean and uncluttered hallways, work areas, and patient-care spaces.

  • Immediately report spills, safety hazards, damaged equipment, or other environmental concerns.

  • Follow all required PPE and hand hygiene practices.

  • Participate in required infection prevention and safety education.

  • Provide professional, respectful, and compassionate interactions with patients and families.

  • Protect patient privacy and confidentiality at all times.

  • Communicate effectively with nurses, surgical technologists, physicians, anesthesia personnel, and other ASC staff.

  • Respond promptly to requests from the OR, Pre-Op, and PACU teams.

  • Work cooperatively with the entire surgical team to keep cases moving efficiently.

  • Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to assist in different areas of the ASC throughout the day.

  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

  • Previous experience in an ASC, hospital, operating room, patient transport, surgical services, or healthcare environment preferred.

  • Previous OR or surgical services experience is a plus.

  • Must be comfortable working around surgical procedures and in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

  • Must be dependable, punctual, and able to work effectively as part of a team.

  • Strong communication and organizational skills.

  • Ability to follow instructions and prioritize multiple requests.

  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and professionalism.

  • Must be willing to assist wherever needed within the scope of the position.

This is an active position requiring frequent standing and walking throughout the ASC.

The employee must be able to:

  • Push and pull stretchers, beds, and equipment.

  • Assist with patient transfers using appropriate safe-patient-handling techniques.

  • Lift and carry supplies and equipment.

  • Bend, stoop, reach, and maneuver throughout patient-care areas.

  • Stand and walk for extended periods.

  • Safely perform repetitive physical tasks throughout the surgical day.

This is a non-licensed support position. The Orderly will perform only duties within the scope of the position, applicable training, ASC policies and procedures, and applicable laws and regulations. The Orderly does not independently perform nursing assessments, administer medications, provide licensed clinical care, or perform duties requiring a professional healthcare license.
