Purpose of the Role:

As a Sorbent Chemist Co-op, you will contribute to the research and development of advanced sorbent materials for carbon-capture applications, with a primary focus on porous polymer sorbents for direct air capture and opportunities to support metal-organic framework (MOF) development. You will conduct laboratory-based sorbent synthesis, characterization, experimental testing, and data analysis, while researching scientific literature and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to advance sorbent development. You will also communicate research findings through technical reports, presentations, and other documentation while supporting the organization and coordination of laboratory activities.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

• You are currently in your 3rd or 4th year of university studying Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, or a related discipline, with at least 8 months of academic or industry laboratory experience.
• You have hands-on laboratory experience with sorbent or materials development, ideally including organic or porous polymer synthesis, with experience in two- to three-step small-molecule organic synthesis and purification considered an asset.
• You have exposure to material characterization techniques such as FTIR, TGA, particle size distribution (PSD), gas sorption analysis, SEM, XRD, or NMR, with the ability to analyze and interpret experimental data.
• You have strong research, analytical, organizational, and communication skills, with the ability to conduct literature searches, document experimental results, prepare technical reports and presentations, and manage laboratory activities effectively.
• You are detail-oriented, adaptable, safety-conscious, and comfortable working independently while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced research environment.

What Success Looks Like in This Role:

• You will safely and consistently conduct laboratory experiments related to porous polymer sorbent synthesis and development for CO₂ capture and direct air capture applications.
• You will effectively perform and analyze basic sorbent characterization using techniques such as FTIR, TGA, PSD, and gas sorption analysis, while accurately documenting experimental results.
• You will use scientific literature and research findings to support sorbent development activities and contribute to the evaluation and improvement of material performance.
• You will communicate research findings clearly through technical reports, presentations, Excel-based analysis, and team meetings, while maintaining accurate laboratory records and documentation.
• You will demonstrate strong laboratory organization and ownership by maintaining experimental setups, chemical inventories, SDS documentation, and purchase requests while following Svante’s health and safety requirements and lean culture.
