About the Position:
Swyfft runs on data. Multi-terabyte transactional and analytical databases that power instant quoting, binding, and claims servicing across our home and commercial package products. We’re looking for a seasoned Senior Database Administrator to serve as the strong second to our Director of Database Services and help own the health, performance, security, and reliability of our database estate. You’ll work hands-on across SQL Server (on-premises and on Azure VMs) and Azure SQL (PaaS) tuning queries, safeguarding data, managing backups and recovery, and keeping our ETL pipelines running. This is a highly technical role for someone who genuinely enjoys living in the data tier.

Occasional travel for team meetings and training may be required.
Key Responsibilities: (What you'll be asked to do)
- Administer and maintain a variety of multi-terabyte databases across both SQL Server (on-premises and Azure VMs) and Azure SQL (PaaS) platforms.
- Own backup, restore, and recovery. Design, automate, and regularly test backups to meet defined RPO and RTO targets, and lead recovery efforts when needed.
- Monitor and tune database and query performance; diagnose and resolve bottlenecks, blocking, and indexing issues across high-volume transactional and analytical workloads.
- Implement and maintain database security and data privacy controls, including access management, encryption, and auditing in line with our regulatory obligations.
- Design, build, and maintain SSIS ETL packages and other data integration and data movement workflows.
- Manage high availability and disaster recovery configurations (Always On availability groups, failover groups, geo-replication), and partner with development teams on schema design, query optimization, and safe deployment of database changes.
The Successful Candidate: (What we're looking for)
- Deep, hands-on expertise administering SQL Server in production at scale, including very large (multi-terabyte) databases.
- Strong working knowledge of Azure SQL (PaaS) and the broader Azure data platform; equally comfortable operating in PaaS and IaaS/on-premises models.
- Demonstrated mastery of performance tuning and execution plans, indexing strategy, wait statistics, and query optimization.
- Solid command of backup/recovery, high availability, and disaster recovery design and testing, along with database security and data privacy practices (encryption, access control, auditing).
- Self-directed and dependable; you can be trusted to own critical systems with minimal oversight and serve as a credible second to our Director of Database Services.
Some Requirements:
- 8+ years of hands-on database administration experience, including significant time managing large-scale, production SQL Server environments.
- Strong T-SQL skills and demonstrated experience with Azure SQL, SSIS, and database security and privacy controls.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, a related field, or equivalent experience required.
- Relevant Microsoft data platform certifications (e.g., Azure Database Administrator Associate) a plus
Computer Skills:
- We’re a MS Office environment
- Experience using video and chat technology (MSTeams & Slack)
Other: This is a remote opportunity

The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is dependent on a candidate’s location and experience level. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations. This salary range is a good-faith estimate of what Swyfft may pay for this position at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on skills, qualifications, and experience. The range reflects annual compensation (as applicable) and does not include bonuses or other incentives that the company may choose to pay at its sole discretion.
