RESEARCH ENGINEER

Mid-career Systems Engineering position for UAB's Engineering and Innovative Technology Development (EITD) group.  Develop viable system requirements, track requirements and associated verification documentation, develop test plans for requirement verification activities, and provide support for flight operations for payload system for space applications.  Develop and supervise the development of detailed system engineering documents and data analysis for requirement development and verification, as well as for post-flight and pre-flight support. Review and check engineering documentation produced by others for adherence to technical specifications, quality standards, and requirements. Demonstrate effective technical communication to work closely with engineers of other disciplines to develop high-reliability integrated systems.

Engineering and Innovative Technology Development (EITD) was created to support the development of specialized research instruments for ground and microgravity-based research experiments. Since 1990, we have grown into a full-service organization, providing customers with a range of solutions from technical guidance to complete turn-key systems and services from concept through fabrication, deployment, and operational support.

Our engineers are experienced in design, development, and commercialization of innovative hardware and software systems for the aeronautic and life sciences industry. As one of the nation's leading developers in cold stowage hardware for use in microgravity and exploration, our expertise covers mechanical, electrical, and software design, fabrication, assembly, test, and sustainment; as well as, systems engineering, safety and verification documentation / closeout, crew training, launch site support, mission operations, and recovery.

Reports to EITD Systems Engineering Section Lead

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Typically performs multiple engineering-related tasks in various assignments within the organization.

• Oversees the development, implementation, and analysis of technical products and systems.

• Has broad knowledge of engineering and quality procedures and assists in the resolution of complex problems.

• May guide and train less experienced engineers.

• Contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project.

• Work is generally independent and collaborative in nature.

• Support meetings, teleconferences, and travel as required by projects.

• May be required to work nights and weekends, as necessary, to support real-time flight operations.  Travel to support testing and launch/return activities for approx. 7-day periods, 5-10 trips per year possible.

(Annual Salary:  $77,640  -  $126,170)

Bachelor's degree in a STEM related field and five (5) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Preferred Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

• Systems Engineering experience with space-flight or aerospace applications

• Systems Engineering experience for development and production of embedded / integrate systems

• Experience with requirements development and associated verification and validation activities

• Systems Engineering experience with ISO9001 and AS9100 Quality Programs

• Operations support for NASA or commercial space activities

• Experience using CAD software (e.g. SolidEdge or SolidWorks)
