Custodian - Various Work Schedules/Multiple Buildings - (Two Positions)

UConn’s Facilities Operations Department has two job openings for Custodian positions at the Storrs Campus. The work schedule could be 1st Shift Wednesday – Sunday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. or 1st Shift Saturday – Wednesday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. dependent upon operating needs. These are permanent, full-time, positions working 37.5 hours per week.
The hourly salary is $21.59/hour and is non-negotiable for those new to State Employment; the hourly rate of pay for current NP-2 employees is calculated based on current salary/step.
These positions are categorized as “Open to the Public”; current UConn NP-2 employees will be given preference in the hiring process. The following are the current work schedules and locations this announcement is recruiting for:
- 1st Shift Weekend Custodian: Wednesday – Sunday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.– Supervisor: Supervising Custodian - TBD
- OR
- 1st Shift Weekend Custodian: Saturday – Wednesday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.– Supervisor: Supervising Custodian - TBD
Weekend differential is applied to hours worked on Saturday or Sunday if the entire 7.5-hour shift is worked.

- Performs custodial tasks and maintenance of areas such as dormitories, classrooms, offices, auditoriums, wards, kitchens, dining rooms and lavatories including outdoor areas (i.e. trash around buildings);
- Dusts, mops, sweeps, scrubs, strips, waxes and polishes floors using appropriate equipment such as floor polishers and buffers;
- Washes, dusts and polishes glass including windows, woodwork, walls, furniture and metal equipment;
- Makes beds;
- Checks, marks, stores and issues linens, blankets, and clothing (limited to individual’s work area not to include counting and inspection for a larger area);
- Collects and counts soiled laundry;
- Distributes, empties and sterilizes glassware, wash basins and bedpans;
- Sweeps walks;
- Collects and disposes of trash;
- Reports needs for repairs;
- Performs minor maintenance;
- Runs errands;
- Inspects buildings for damage and reports conditions to supervisor;
- May change light bulbs and replace fuses;
- May lubricate or tighten door hinges, drawers, cabinets, etc.;
- May replace ceiling or floor tiles;
- May remove snow and ice from stairways and walkways around buildings;
- May sand and salt stairways and walkways;
- May move furniture and/or set-up classrooms;

- Demonstrated experience in operating custodial equipment such as floor scrubbers, swing machines, back-pack vacuums, carpet extractors, and/or ride-on auto scrubbers.

~1 min read- Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
- A physical examination may be required.
- Incumbents must have adequate physical strength and agility to walk up and down stairs frequently and climb ladders independently. Must be able to lift, carry and push material weighing up to 50 lbs. Must have the ability to utilize ladders, floor polishers, buffers and vacuums. Incumbents must possess the ability to utilize appropriate equipment, perform the required duties set forth above and will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary.
Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment and/or individuals.
