Requirements
~4 min read- C1/D Visa and Schengen Visa, if available
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field
- Proven professional experience in IT support, preferably within the cruise, maritime, hospitality, or other international environments
- Relevant industry IT certifications would be an advantage
- Strong communication, interpersonal and customer-service skills, with the ability to work effectively in a demanding, multicultural environment
- Good knowledge of networking and connectivity, including basic configuration, troubleshooting and maintenance
- Familiarity with onboard and hospitality systems, including POS/PMS systems, with the ability to provide support and troubleshoot issues
- Strong end-user and endpoint support skills, including troubleshooting hardware, peripherals, software and connectivity issues
- Familiarity with IT Service Management (ITSM) tools, ticketing systems and technical documentation platforms
- Proficiency with standard productivity software, including word processing, spreadsheets and presentation applications
- Ability to configure, maintain and troubleshoot onboard IT hardware, software and network infrastructure
- Strong work ethic, reliability and excellent teamwork skills
- Ability to work effectively under the direction of the IT Manager and contribute proactively to the smooth operation of the vessel’s IT environment
The successful candidate should be service-oriented, technically capable and comfortable working independently while supporting the IT Manager and the wider onboard team.
Position Summary
- The role of the Assistant IT Officer is responsible for assisting the IT Officer with supporting the day-to-day IT operations onboard. This is accomplished via several activities:
- End User and Guest Technical Support
- Daily systems maintenance routines
- Monitoring system performance
- Monitoring the incident support queues while resolving open incidents
- Special projects for new system deployments, upgrades and decommissioning
- The expectation of the role is to ensure that all IT systems are kept up to date with the latest in security patches, while operating at optimal performance levels, with little to no impact to the operations onboard.
Reporting Structure
- The role of Assistant IT Officer reports to the onboard IT Officer
Computer knowledge:
- Ability to apply the principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
- Working knowledge of networking, computer hardware and software, with a focus on operating systems (Windows, Mac OS, and Linux) and business application suites.
- Ability to conduct basic network troubleshooting (in particular LAN), including knowledge of standard network cabling.
- Ability to work with Microsoft Office package, install various applications, install printers and scanners and other peripherals needed
Safety Duties:
- Participates in crew and passenger safety drills according to instructions.
- Must always comply with the Company’s safety and pollution prevention regulations and operating procedures.
- Leads by example by taking care of Health and Safety of self and others.
- Ensures that all work equipment, personal protective equipment, chemicals and safety devices are used correctly.
Education/Experience/Qualifications:
- Minimum 6 months experience in a technical user assistance role such as a helpdesk or similar
- CompTIA A+ and/or CompTIA N+ certification preferred.
- Associate degree in computer science or related field from an accredited university or the international equivalent, or equivalent work-related experience
- Excellent problem solving and analytical skills.
- Demonstrates ability to perform successfully in an open environment where frequent and direct interaction and collaboration with guests and peers is ordinary.
- Excellent organizational and analytical skills
- Ship experience a plus, but not required.
Language requirements:
Good English (verbal, written and technical). English is the working and safety language on board. This also includes the ability to give and receive instructions in verbal and written forms and to engage with guests and crew members effectively and efficiently. Additional languages are considered beneficial.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. All shipboard employees must be physically able to participate in emergency lifesaving procedures and drills. Full use and range of arms and legs as well as full visual, verbal and hearing abilities are required to receive and give instructions in the event of an emergency including the lowering of lifeboats. Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
