Boilermakers perform skilled fabrication, assembly, modification, inspection, and repair of roadway equipment machinery used in railroad operations.
This role requires advanced proficiency in welding, metal fabrication, structural assembly, and the safe operation of a wide range of industrial tools and equipment. Boilermakers ensure the structural integrity, reliability, and safe performance of locomotive and heavy-equipment components.
Responsibilities
~1 min read- →Fabricate, assemble, and modify locomotive structures, components, and heavy sheet-metal parts using welding, cutting, riveting, bolting, soldering, and grinding techniques.
- →Operate shop machinery, tools, vehicles, and equipment, including drill presses, punch presses, power saws, grinders, impact wrenches, acetylene and plasma torches, and electric/gas welding equipment.
- →Safely and effectively operate acetylene torches, plasma torches, non-powered hand tools (pliers, wrenches, etc.), powered tools (drills, grinders, saws), and welding equipment.
- →Weld a variety of metals—including iron, steel, stainless steel, and aluminum—using gas welding, brazing, SMAW, MIG, and TIG processes in multiple welding positions.
- →Remove and install welded or threaded stay bolts, studs, plugs, and related components.
- →Operate overhead hoists, jacks, and lifting equipment to safely position and move heavy parts.
- →Read, interpret, and apply information from blueprints, CAD/CAM drawings, and technical documentation.
- →Lay out, fit, and verify measurements for sheet-metal work involving 13-gauge or heavier materials.
- →Identify and correct unsafe conditions; ensure tools, equipment, and work areas are in safe operating condition prior to beginning work.
- →Adhere to all company and industry safety rules, procedures, and best practices.
- →Communicate technical information, job procedures, and work-related updates clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Requirements

- Ability to report to the designated work location as required.
- Ability to work safely under the environmental and operational conditions described.
- Ability to work assigned shifts and any shift required by operational needs.
- Ability to meet travel requirements as needed.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 60 lbs without assistance.
- Ability to visually distinguish red, blue, green, yellow, and clear (lunar) indicator lights.
- Ability to recognize and differentiate verbal and non-verbal sounds such as alarms and signals.
- Ability to use hands and hand tools for grasping, turning, pulling, and other manual tasks.
- Ability to climb ladders and safely get on and off equipment.
- Ability to bend, walk, stand, and sit for extended periods.
- Ability to occasionally work at elevated heights, including on top of locomotives or other equipment.
- Ability to provide documentation of work experience, training, and education for evaluation.
