About the Role:
We are seeking a skilled Field Mechanic to maintain and repair diesel-powered equipment and vehicles. This position involves inspections, diagnostics, preventative maintenance, and repairs both in the shop and in the field. You’ll play a key role in keeping our fleet safe, reliable, and ready for action.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Equipment Inspection & Diagnostics - Conduct thorough inspections and diagnostic tests on diesel-powered vehicles and heavy equipment to assess condition, identify worn or damaged parts, and determine necessary repairs. Use diagnostic tools and software to evaluate performance issues and ensure equipment meets operational standards.
  • Preventive Maintenance & Repairs - Perform scheduled preventive maintenance including fluid checks, filter replacements, lubrication, and corrosion control. Repair or replace major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, and systems such as hydraulics, pneumatics, traction units, clutches, control linkages, and valve mechanisms. Ensure all repairs are completed efficiently and to high safety and quality standards.
  • Field & Shop Repair Coordination - Evaluate whether repairs should be completed in the field or in the shop based on equipment condition and job urgency. Document repair needs and submit detailed repair orders to the Shop Manager for parts requisition. Receive and process parts deliveries, ensuring accurate tracking of shipping tickets and invoices.
  • Performance Testing & Adjustments - Conduct post-repair test drives and performance checks to verify that equipment operates correctly. Make necessary adjustments to controls, systems, and alignments including bearing loads, gear tooth contact, and governor settings.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Safety - Ensure all work complies with federal and state vehicle regulations. Follow company safety protocols and contribute to a culture of safety in the shop and on job sites.
  • Recordkeeping & Software Use - Maintain accurate service and maintenance records using company software (Manager+). Track completed work, parts used, and service intervals to support fleet reliability and compliance.
  • Shop Maintenance & Equipment Care - Keep shop equipment in good working order by following operating instructions, troubleshooting issues, and performing routine maintenance. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Vehicle Appearance & Upkeep - Clean, wash, and paint vehicles and equipment as needed to maintain professional appearance and prevent deterioration.
  • Equipment Operation & Training - Learn to operate various types of equipment including cranes, aerial lift trucks, skid steers, and other specialized machinery. Demonstrate proficiency and safety awareness before operating equipment independently.

 

Qualifications:

  • Requires a vocational/technical diploma; and 2+ years of experience in diesel fleet maintenance and repair; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Preference given to candidates with a Class A CDL or willingness to obtain within 6 months of hire.

This position is based out of Waverly, Nebraska and requires some overnight travel. Normal schedule is Monday – Friday, 45-55 hours/week.
