If you’re a hands-on AI Engineer who loves building, shipping, and scaling real AI products — this is your moment. You’ll work in delivery squads designing, building, and operationalising production-grade AI and GenAI solutions that directly enhance Westpac’s products and services.
It’s an exciting time for AI at Westpac, and you’ll be part of our rapidly growing DDAI (Data, Digital & Artificial Intelligence) team — where ideas move fast and models go live.
This role is for engineers who want to build, deploy, and own AI in production, working side-by-side with data scientists, software engineers, and product managers. To hit the ground running, you will have real-time experience in the AI Engineering space and can demonstrate solid hands-on AI experience beyond experimentation and POCs.
Responsibilities
~1 min read- →Designing, building, and deploying machine learning models and GenAI applications that solve genuine business problems.
- →Working hands-on with large-scale data, from preprocessing through to insights and features.
- →Building robust data pipelines and APIs (batch, real-time and streaming).
- →Implementing GenAI solutions using modern frameworks, prompting techniques, RAG patterns, fine-tuning, and evaluation.
- →Deploying models into production and monitoring performance in the real world.
- →Collaborating across squads to embed AI into products and services.
- →Keeping pace with fast-moving advances in GenAI, ML and big data — and applying them where they matter.
- →Writing clear documentation to support reproducibility, learning and scale.
- →Troubleshooting model, data, and deployment issues end-to-end.
- A tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.
- Hands-on production AI/ML experience including working knowledge of MLOps and AI tooling,
- Strong Python skills and deep experience with TensorFlow, PyTorch or scikit-learn.
- Demonstrable GenAI/LLM build experience (prompting, agents, RAG, fine-tuning) using frameworks such as LlamaIndex, LangChain, AutoGen, DSPy.
- Cloud platform expertise and containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes)
- Strong software engineering fundamentals — Git, CI/CD, clean code.
- Experience with big data technologies (Spark, Hadoop or similar), plus experimentation and A/B testing.
- A problem-solving mindset, great people skills and a passion for building AI in general.
