Position Summary
This is a contract position (4–6 months) with the potential for longer-term employment based on project needs. The Site Superintendent – Civil/Earthworks shares our energy and passion in building a company committed to transparent, honest, and simple construction services. They are responsible for overseeing YCI civil and earthworks projects to successful completion. They organize and coordinate all site activities and supervise crews to complete the project on time and on budget. The Superintendent is responsible for job site safety, scheduling, subcontractor coordination, project meetings, inspections, and quality control.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage all on-site project specific civil and earthworks activities; ensure project construction is executed in a safe, timely, and efficient manner
- Manage site flow of information
- Create and manage construction schedules; coordinate earthworks sequencing and assist subcontractors in maintaining productivity
- Liaise with clients, AHJ officials, utility owners, and regulatory bodies; develop and maintain productive working relationships
- Review civil and grading drawings, geotechnical reports, and construction documents to identify conflicts and issues in advance
- Supervise earthworks subcontractors, equipment operators, suppliers, and field labour
- Conduct site safety orientations, tailgate meetings, and weekly safety meetings with all subcontractors and field personnel
- Review on-site civil and earthworks activities to confirm that work is being constructed per drawings, specifications, codes, and geotechnical requirements, and that all work meets York and industry standards
- Establish and maintain the job site; coordinate heavy equipment, materials, and site office requirements for civil operations
- Monitor and maintain the project construction schedule on a regular basis; flag risks to earthworks sequencing and proactively adjust to keep the project on track
- Implement and enforce OHS requirements and York Construction’s Health and Safety Program, with particular attention to excavation, trenching, and ground disturbance hazards
- Review the accuracy of civil shop drawings, as-built surveys, change orders, and RFI’s as required
- Investigate and resolve any issues that arise
- Responsible for field documentation including daily logs, earthwork quantity tracking, ground disturbance records, daily safety inspections, and other required reports
- Order materials and schedule inspections as necessary; coordinate underground utility locates, offsite utilities, and liaise with applicable authorities having jurisdiction
- Ensure Quality Control / Quality Assurance processes are adhered to, including compaction testing, material gradation, and reviews performed by testing agencies and geotechnical consultants
- Provide leadership and technical guidance to other team members
- Constantly strive to improve company processes and the quality of the finished product
Bona Fide Occupational Requirements (BFOR)
- The ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly and safely as part of daily duties.
- The ability to walk long distances over uneven terrain as required by the nature of the work. This includes navigating areas with potential obstacles and varying surfaces.
What you bring to York
- A minimum of 5+ years’ experience as a Site Superintendent, with demonstrated experience on civil and/or earthworks projects
- Hands-on experience with earthworks scopes including grading, excavation, underground utilities, site servicing, and/or stormwater management
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
- Previous experience using Procore considered an asset
- Ability to work in a fast-paced organization continually meeting deadlines without sacrificing safety standards
