Missoula Children's Theatre is hiring a full time Director of People and Culture to join our team in Missoula, Montana.

Job Summary


The Director of People and Culture leads MCT’s human resources functions, including recruiting, onboarding, employee relations, benefits, compliance, performance management, policy administration, safety support, and employee records. This position supports employees, supervisors, and leadership by providing practical HR guidance, helping maintain consistent employment practices, and supporting a professional, compliant, and healthy workplace culture.

 

Essential Responsibilities of the Position:  

 

Human Resources Leadership and Compliance:

 

  • Lead and manage MCT’s human resources functions, systems, policies, procedures, and employment practices.
  • Supervise Human Resources department personnel, including assigning work, providing guidance, monitoring workload, supporting development, and completing performance review processes.
  • Develop, update, and maintain employee policies, handbooks, job descriptions, HR procedures, and related employment documentation.
  • Help ensure employment practices are consistent, well-documented, and compliant with applicable state and federal laws.
  • Provide guidance to employees, supervisors, and leadership on employee relations, workplace expectations, performance concerns, corrective action, documentation, and sensitive personnel matters.
  • Attend and participate in leadership committee meetings and provide HR perspective, updates, guidance, and follow-up as appropriate.


Recruiting, Hiring and Onboarding:

 

  • Coordinate and manage recruiting, hiring, and onboarding processes for homestaff, work study students, seasonal employees, contractors, and other local positions assigned, supporting an organization with approximately 42 homestaff positions at full capacity.
  • Manage employment postings, applicant communication, screening processes, hiring materials, employment contracts, offer letters, and onboarding documentation.
  • Coordinate or conduct background checks, motor vehicle record checks, reference checks, and other pre-employment processes as required by position.
  • Coordinate and support hiring processes for tour actors, including applicant files, references, hiring documentation, employment contracts, onboarding support, and communication with the Director of Tour. This includes supporting annual recruitment needs that may range from approximately 150 to 200 tour actors per year.

 

HR Systems, Records, Safety, and Risk Support:


  • Maintain accurate employee records, personnel files, HRIS data, employment documentation, HR reports, and compliance-related records.
  • Manage HR systems and administrative processes used for onboarding, forms, benefits, performance reviews, compliance tracking, and employee records.
  • Oversee or support safety-related processes, OSHA recordkeeping, incident documentation, employee safety communication, and safety awareness efforts.
  • Serve on the Safety Committee and support committee documentation, follow-up, communication, and related safety initiatives.
  • Serve as a liaison with Montana State Fund or other safety-related partners as assigned, and assist with driver safety program administration, motor vehicle record processes, and related tracking.


Non-Essential Responsibilities of the Position

 

  • Assist with employee social events, recognition activities, wellness efforts, morale initiatives, and staff engagement activities as assigned.
  • Attend staff meetings, committee meetings, planning meetings, and other applicable organizational meetings as needed.


Minimum Qualifications:

 

  • Five or more years of progressively responsible human resources experience, including employee relations, recruiting, benefits, compliance, policy administration, and performance management.
  • Strong working knowledge of federal and state employment laws and HR practices, including hiring, workplace conduct, leave administration, wage and hour considerations, personnel records, performance documentation, and separation processes.
  • Experience providing HR guidance to supervisors, managers, or organizational leadership, including support with employee relations, performance concerns, corrective action, and documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive employee matters with confidentiality, discretion, sound judgment, and professionalism.
  • Strong communication, organization, problem-solving, attention to detail, and follow-through skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Proficiency with HR systems, Microsoft Office programs, email, spreadsheets, online forms, and database systems.
  • Ability to work effectively with employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Valid driver’s license.

 

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business Administration, Organizational Leadership, Nonprofit Management, or a related field.
  • HR certification such as SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR.
  • Previous HR management or department leadership experience.
  • Experience in nonprofit, theatre, education, seasonal, touring, multi-state, or mission-driven employment environments.
  • Experience developing or improving HR systems, employee handbooks, review processes, onboarding systems, benefits administration, compensation review, training programs, compliance procedures, investigations, safety programs, or supervisor coaching.

 

Physical Requirements:

 

  • The position may require you to sit at a desk for periods of time that could exceed 4 hours with intermittent breaks as needed.
  • This position may require you to stand for periods of time that could exceed 3 hours with intermittent breaks as needed.
  • May be requested to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • May be requested to drive a company vehicle for occasional duty.

 

Work Environment:


  • This position operates in a dynamic work environment with shifting priorities and time-sensitive responsibilities.
  • This position may require managing multiple tasks simultaneously and responding to changing needs or unexpected issues.
  • Work periods may include evenings, weekends, extended hours, and situations that can be stressful at times, particularly during peak operational periods.


Equipment Used:

 

  • Computer, telephone, copier, printer, fax machine, paper cutter, step ladder, HR systems, shared drives, spreadsheets, online forms, and standard office equipment.

 

Professional Conduct and Collaboration:


  • Maintain positive, professional working relationships with staff, visitors, volunteers, and the public.
  • Always Represent Missoula Children’s Theatre in a professional manner.
  • Support all-hands efforts as needed, consistent with individual skills and availability.
  • Participate in training or development opportunities related to the role when available and appropriate.
  • Act in the best interests of the organization and its facilities.
