Division and Unit Overview 

The mission of the ACS Communications Division is to provide news and ACS information and to communicate the vital role of chemical professionals and the chemical sciences in solving critical global challenges and improving everyday life. The Digital Product & Experience Team serves our constituents by enhancing user and customer interactions and delivering value across all digital channels in the world of chemistry. 

 

Position Summary  

The DPX Team is seeking an energetic and skilled UI Developer with a strong front-end development background and a passion for building accessible, responsive, and user-centered digital experiences. This role will focus on translating UX/UI designs, business requirements, design system standards, and user insights into high-quality front-end interfaces. The ideal candidate has strong experience with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, responsive web development, accessibility, and modern front-end best practices. They should be comfortable collaborating with designers, UX researchers, content strategists, product managers, business stakeholders, and technology teams to deliver polished digital products.  

The UI Developer will play a key role in supporting ACS.org and related digital products by building reusable UI components, improving front-end quality, supporting design system adoption, and ensuring digital experiences are consistent, accessible, performant, and aligned with ACS brand standards. 

 

Key responsibilities: 

  • Develop responsive, accessible, and high-quality front-end interfaces using HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, and modern web standards.  
  • Translate wireframes, high-fidelity designs, prototypes, and design system documentation into production-ready UI. 
  • Collaborate closely with UX/UI designers, UX researchers, content strategists, product managers, and backend AEM developers to deliver user-centered digital experiences.
  • Build, maintain, and improve reusable AEM UI components, templates, and front-end patterns. 
  • Support and contribute to the organization’s design system by ensuring consistency between design assets and front-end implementation. 
  • Ensure web experiences meet accessibility standards, including WCAG 2.2 AA and Section 508 requirements. 
  • Apply responsive, mobile-first, cross-browser, performance, SEO, and progressive enhancement best practices. 
  • Conduct front-end QA to ensure visual accuracy, usability, accessibility, performance, and consistency with approved designs, including troubleshooting UI issues across browsers, devices, CMS templates/components.  
  • Participate in sprint planning, design reviews, backlog refinement, critiques, and technical discussions. 
  • Document front-end patterns, CMS component usage, implementation notes, and UI guidance for internal teams. 
  • Stay current with front-end development trends, CMS best practices, accessibility standards, and AI-assisted development tools.  

 

Desired Skills & Experience 

Required 

  • Degree in computer science, web development, digital media, interaction design, human-computer interaction, or equivalent professional experience. 
  • 4+ years of experience in front-end development, UI development, or related web development roles. 
  • Strong proficiency in HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, and modern front-end development practices.  
  • Strong understanding of responsive design, mobile-first development, cross-browser compatibility, and progressive enhancement. 
  • Experience developing within enterprise CMS and commerce platforms, especially Adobe Experience Manager, Adobe Magento Commerce, WordPress, or similar systems. 
  • Experience translating Figma, Adobe XD, or similar design files into accurate front-end implementation. 
  • Experience working with design systems, component libraries, reusable UI patterns, or shared front-end frameworks.  
  • Strong understanding of accessibility standards, including WCAG 2.2 AA and Section 508. 
  • Familiarity with APIs, JSON, design tokens, headless CMS concepts, and component-based architecture. 
  • Experience with CSS architecture, design tokens, reusable styles, and scalable front-end patterns.  
  • Experience with front-end build tools and workflows such as NPM, Vite, Webpack, or similar tools. 
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban).  
  • Detail-oriented with strong interpersonal skills and teamwork 
  • A growth mindset and curiosity for improving user experience, front-end quality, development workflows and always looking to improve things and new innovations. 
  • A strong portfolio showcasing your development work, process and final outcomes, including but not limited to wireframes, interactive prototypes, and open-source project contributions.   

 

Highly preferred 

  • Experience using AI-assisted coding tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, ChatGPT, Claude, or similar tools to improve development speed, code quality, prototyping, testing, or documentation. 
  • Experience with modern JavaScript frameworks or libraries such as React, Vue, Angular, or Web Components. 
  • Experience with performance optimization, Core Web Vitals, SEO-friendly front-end implementation, and semantic HTML. 
  • Familiarity with analytics or behavioral insight platforms, such as Adobe Analytics, Google Analytics, ContentSquare, or similar tools.

This role is based in our Washington, DC office. A reasonable rate of compensation for this position is $95,000-$115,000 per year. ACS employees work a hybrid schedule, consisting of working onsite two days per work week, as decided by functional area. The balance of the week is open to working remotely, though employees are always welcome onsite each day if they choose.

Additional benefits may apply based on skills, experience, and location.
