At ATB, we exist to make it possible for our clients, team members and communities. Our purpose is more than aspirational. It's a real commitment we live every day through our values (what we call the ATB ID).
Life at ATB is about more than work. In fact, we’re consistently recognized as one of Canada's top employers thanks to our high-care, high-performance culture, upheld by the three commitments we make to our team members:
Impact in action: No matter where you are in the organization, you're empowered to make an impact in the lives of our clients and communities.
Thrive together: We want you—the unique, authentic you—to feel safe and celebrated at work. We're on a continuous journey to build the most flexible and inclusive programs.
Ready for tomorrow: We want to enable your success through interesting and challenging work, performance enablement, and learning and development.
## About the role
ATB is seeking an individual to join as Legal Counsel Capital Markets to establish and lead a dedicated legal documentation and advisory function within our Capital Markets COO organization. Sitting at the intersection of strategy and execution, you will champion business enablement by accelerating client onboarding, modernizing our trading readiness processes, enhancing documentation governance and execution, and providing practical legal guidance to Capital Markets leaders on client transactions, new products, market infrastructure changes and strategic business initiatives. Operating within a disciplined governance framework, you will lead the end-to-end negotiation and lifecycle management of institutional trading and financing agreements—including ISDA, CSA, GMRA, and GMSLA—across high-growth product areas like repo and metals.
This is a high-impact leadership role that requires strong legal-documentation judgment and exceptional cross-functional influence. You will act as a key partner to Enterprise Legal, Credit Risk, Compliance, and Front Office teams to safeguard legal standards while driving commercial velocity. Beyond daily execution, you will spearhead strategic initiatives during market shifts, including playbook development, legal entity repapering, and process improvements, making this an ideal opportunity for a proactive leader looking to shape a premier documentation operating model from the ground up.
## Accountabilities
* End-to-End Documentation Management: Lead and coordinate the execution and lifecycle of capital markets and trading-enablement documentation, including ISDA (Master Agreements/CSAs), GMRA, GMSLA, repo, metals, custody, clearing, and account control agreements.
* Negotiation & Legal Coordination: Lead negotiations of standard and moderately complex terms within approved playbooks; identify and escalate bespoke or jurisdiction-specific legal issues to Enterprise Legal while coordinating with Credit Risk, Tax, Compliance, and Front Office stakeholders.
* Workflow & Backlog Oversight: Manage documentation priorities, intake tracking, and execution readiness, while aggressively remediating aged backlogs and resolving operational bottlenecks.
* Governance & Operating Model: Build and maintain a scalable operating model, establishing procedures, clause governance, and controls, while providing management information (MI) on turnaround times and capacity to support audits and regulatory readiness.
* Business Enablement & Onboarding: Partner across functions to accelerate client onboarding and trading readiness, supporting strategic product expansion and resolving delays affecting client activation or product launches.
* Stakeholder Management & Reporting: Act as the central liaison between Capital Markets, Enterprise Legal, and internal risk/operational functions, protecting legal standards while delivering clear risk and progress reporting to senior management.
## Skills, experience & requirements
* Law degree strongly preferred; qualification as a lawyer in a relevant jurisdiction preferred.
* 7–12+ years of relevant experience in capital markets legal documentation, documentation negotiation, counterparty onboarding, or related functions within a bank, broker-dealer, or financial institution.
* Strong working knowledge of ISDA and CSA documentation required.
* Knowledge of GMRA, GMSLA, repo, and metals documentation strongly preferred.
* Strong understanding of documentation risk, negotiation fallback positions, approval governance, and escalation discipline.
* Demonstrated ability to manage large volumes of negotiations and stakeholder demands in a deadline-driven environment.
* Excellent written, verbal, and stakeholder management skills.
Don’t meet all the requirements on the list?
A resume only goes so far in expressing who you are and the unique perspectives you bring. If you believe your skills and experience align with the role—but you might not check all the boxes—we want to hear from you. We encourage candidates from all work backgrounds, equity-seeking communities and experience levels to apply. If you’re seeking a career where your drive, perspective and growth are celebrated, we want to hear from you.
We’re dedicated to building a workforce reflective of those within our communities, and a culture where our team members are equipped with what they need to succeed—their way. Part of creating an inclusive workplace is recognizing our role in advancing Truth and Reconciliation. We are committed to meeting and exceeding the standards set out in the Partnership Accreditation in Indigenous Relations program created by the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business.
