SUMMARY

The City of Bentonville is seeking a professional, organized, and highly motivated individual to serve as the Parks and Recreation Supervisor – Gateway Park. This position provides leadership and oversight for the maintenance, horticultural care, and daily operations of Gateway Park and associated facilities. Responsibilities include supervising maintenance staff and horticulture operations; coordinating contracted mowing and landscape services; supporting park programming and events; and ensuring the park remains safe, clean, functional, and visually exceptional. This position is responsible for managing a high-profile park asset and requires strong leadership, coordination, and attention to detail. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • 1 Horticulturist
  • 3 Parks Maintenance Workers
  • Seasonal and temporary staff as assigned
  • Contract mowing and landscape vendors

 

LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Annual Budget: $750,000 – $1,200,000
  • Responsible Asset Value: $40,000,000+ (park infrastructure, amenities, landscape assets, and equipment)

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Gateway Park and associated amenities
  • Landscape beds, turf areas, and horticultural displays
  • Irrigation systems and water management
  • Trails, plazas, playgrounds, and park infrastructure
  • Contract mowing and landscape services
  • Park programming and event support

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting relationships, schedules, and assignments may change to meet operational needs. Attendance, professionalism, and teamwork are essential.

Leadership & Administration

  • Provide direct supervision to horticulture and maintenance staff, including scheduling, assigning work, and evaluating performance.
  • Assist with hiring, training, coaching, and development of employees.
  • Interpret and communicate City and departmental policies.

Operations & Maintenance

  • Oversee daily maintenance of park facilities, landscapes, and amenities to ensure high-quality standards.
  • Coordinate mowing, irrigation, pruning, fertilization, and general grounds maintenance activities.
  • Ensure prompt response to maintenance issues to maintain safety and park appearance.

Horticulture & Landscape Management

  • Guide plant selection, planting schedules, seasonal displays, pruning programs, and pest management.
  • Monitor irrigation systems and ensure efficient water use.
  • Maintain high-quality aesthetic standards for a signature park environment.

Contract & Vendor Oversight

  • Manage and oversee contract mowing and landscape services.
  • Monitor contractor performance and ensure compliance with City standards and specifications.
  • Assist in developing scopes of work and procurement processes.

Budgeting, Procurement & Administration

  • Assist with budget development, tracking expenditures, and recommending purchases.
  • Manage purchasing, supply procurement, and inventory for park operations.
  • Ensure accurate invoice processing, work order management, and documentation.

Event & Public Engagement Support

  • Coordinate operational support for park events, programming, and rentals.
  • Work with Recreation and Events staff to align maintenance with programming needs.
  • Provide excellent customer service to park users, vendors, and stakeholders.

Safety & Compliance

  • Conduct routine inspections of park assets and amenities.
  • Ensure compliance with City safety standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Promote a strong safety culture through training and leadership.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position provides direct supervision to full-time, part-time, and/or seasonal personnel as assigned, which may include Parks Maintenance Workers, Horticulturists, Crew Leaders, and contracted service providers. Responsibilities include scheduling, training, assigning and reviewing work, evaluating performance, ensuring adherence to City policies and safety standards, and addressing complaints or concerns. Oversees contractor performance to ensure compliance with established City expectations, service levels, and contractual obligations.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Parks & Recreation, Horticulture, Landscape Management, Facilities Maintenance, or a related field; OR
  • Seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in parks maintenance, horticulture, landscape management, or a related field.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of leadership or supervisory experience.
  • Five (5) years of municipal parks experience preferred.

 

SKILLS

  • Strong leadership and team management skills
  • Knowledge of park maintenance, horticulture, and landscape practices
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and coordinate daily operations
  • Effective communication with staff, contractors, and the public
  • Working knowledge of maintenance management systems and basic budgeting

 

CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES

  • Valid driver’s license (required)
  • Playground Safety Inspector Certification (preferred)
  • Chemical Applicator License (preferred)
  • Relevant horticulture, turf, or landscape certifications (preferred)

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands, and communicate clearly
  • Frequent bending, kneeling, and working on uneven terrain
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds
  • Vision requirements include close, distance, color vision, and depth perception

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Frequent outdoor work in varying weather conditions
  • Exposure to mechanical equipment, noise, dust, and chemicals
  • Moderate noise levels typical of park maintenance operations
  • Occasional exposure to heights, fumes, and moving equipment
