Under the general supervision of the Solid Waste Supervisor, this position operates a tractor-trailer to transport solid waste from the County's transfer station to the landfill. The successful candidate will also perform routine vehicle inspections and preventive maintenance and may operate other heavy equipment as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate a tractor-trailer to transport solid waste from the transfer station to the landfill.
  • Conduct daily safety inspections and perform routine preventive maintenance, including checking fluid levels and lubricating equipment.
  • Keep assigned vehicles and equipment clean, safe, organized, and in professional condition.
  • Operate loaders and compactors to process, move, or cover waste at the transfer station, landfill, or other locations as needed.
  • Operate snow-removal and sanding equipment to help maintain safe travel conditions.
  • Apply ice-control materials at intersections, curves, hills, railroad crossings, and other designated areas.
  • Operate heavy equipment in a learning, training, or temporary capacity when assigned.
  • Follow all Bonneville County safety policies and applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Maintain reliable attendance and consistent work performance.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted Idaho Class A Commercial Driver's License.
  • Must complete a Hazardous Waste Recognition Course annually.
  • Must successfully complete pre-employment drug and alcohol testing and a background check.

Work is primarily performed outdoors and frequently involves exposure to changing temperatures, dust, fumes, moving equipment, and varying weather conditions. The position requires walking, climbing, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, and performing physically strenuous work.

The employee must be able to:

  • Regularly lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Safely enter, exit, and operate commercial vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Travel frequently in vehicles and equipment.
  • Perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Some duties involve hazards that could result in serious physical injury. Employees must consistently follow all required safety procedures.

  • High school diploma or equivalent; and
  • Two years of experience performing similar or related duties; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge of heavy-equipment operating principles, practices, and safety standards.
  • Knowledge of the basic maintenance and repair of medium and heavy equipment.
  • Skill in safely operating tractor-trailers and light- to medium-duty equipment.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor for extended periods under varying conditions.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Ability to work effectively with employees, supervisors, and members of the public.
