Arts Project Manager

Role purpose: The Arts Manager will implement activities in country delivered through one or both of the Arts global programmes: Arts in Action and Creative Growth. They may work with a small team in country and manage sector partner and stakeholder relationships. They will also build relationships and work closely with their peers in other countries and across the global arts network, often collaborating on global programmes Role Accountabilities: This role supports the delivery and success of global arts programmes by applying in-depth knowledge of the country’s arts and creative industries while maintaining a strong understanding of UK arts sector priorities. It focuses on identifying opportunities for collaboration between UK and local creative sectors, ensuring that programmes are relevant, impactful, and aligned with both local needs and global objectives. The role also promotes diversity within the UK arts sector and helps strengthen cultural connections and partnerships. The position requires close collaboration with global arts teams to design and implement programmes, manage day-to-day activities, and uphold organisational standards in programme, contract, and financial management. A strong commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion (EDI), and anti-racist practices is embedded throughout programme delivery and organisational culture. The role also contributes to strategic planning, supports the development of country arts portfolios, and leverages digital channels to enhance programme reach, impact, and sustainability. Building and maintaining relationships is a core responsibility, including engaging with cultural organisations, creative industry leaders, delivery partners, and other stakeholders. Through these networks, the role gathers sector insights, strengthens partnerships, and enhances the British Council’s reputation as a trusted and valued cultural partner. It also contributes to communications and storytelling efforts that showcase the impact of arts programmes and reinforce the organisation’s value proposition. Additionally, the role is responsible for overseeing project and programme management activities, including budgeting, procurement, grants management, due diligence, contract administration, reporting, and risk management. It ensures that partners, consultants, and team members deliver agreed outcomes, proactively addresses issues, and escalates concerns when necessary to support successful programme delivery. Role specific knowledge and experience Essentials * University degree or equivalent in a relevant subject or discipline * Good knowledge and understanding of current trends and practices in at least one sector of the arts and creative industries in the country * Experience of working on national arts/ creative industry projects * Experience of managing projects from start to finish and familiarity with project life-cycles * Experience of managing external stakeholders * Experience of using technology in project delivery * Good understanding and experience of supporting monitoring and evaluation Desirables * Understanding and appreciation of current arts trends and practices in the UK * Experience of working on international arts projects Important Information * British Council Pay Band: 6 * Department: Cultural Engagement * Contract type: Indefinite * Working location: Ethiopia * Proof of Identity requirements/right to work in country: Candidates should ensure they have the legal right to live and work in the country where the role is based.
