Role Description & Purpose
We are seeking a passionate and committed Teacher of English to deliver a rewarding and stimulating learning experience for our learners in Algeria. In this role, you will play a key part in promoting high-quality English language teaching while ensuring effective and engaging learning outcomes. You will contribute to creating an environment where learners feel inspired, supported, and motivated to develop their language skills.
As a Teacher of English, you will be responsible for delivering lessons to the highest standards of English Language Teaching, ensuring that each session reflects best practice and supports learner progress. You will uphold and enhance the reputation of the British Council as a world authority in English Language Teaching by maintaining excellence in your classroom delivery and professional conduct.
You will also actively engage in your own professional development, continuously refining your teaching practice and staying up to date with current methodologies. Sharing knowledge, ideas, and best practices with colleagues will be an important part of your contribution, helping to strengthen teaching quality across the organisation.
This role is integral to supporting the wider aims of the British Council and its cultural relations mission, enabling learners from diverse backgrounds to connect through the English language while fostering mutual understanding and opportunity.
Role Accountabilities
We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated Teacher of English to join our team and deliver high-quality English language teaching to a diverse range of learners. In this role, you will plan, prepare and deliver engaging lessons that meet the needs of different customer groups, taking into account individual learning styles, preferences and goals. You will ensure that all teaching aligns with British Council Global Teaching Standards, while consistently meeting organisational expectations and delivering an excellent learner experience.
You will monitor student progress, provide regular feedback and encourage learner autonomy to support achievement and continuous improvement. You will actively contribute to the teaching centre by working collaboratively with colleagues to develop and enhance courses, materials and services, while supporting wider operational and promotional activities. Maintaining excellent communication with students and delivering a high standard of customer service will be central to the role, alongside completing administrative duties with professionalism and accuracy.
As part of your commitment to excellence, you will engage in ongoing professional development to maintain high teaching standards and support best practice in English Language Teaching. You will also help promote the British Council’s cultural relations mission by fostering intercultural understanding and creating opportunities for students to engage with UK culture.
The role requires building positive relationships with customers and colleagues and ensuring full compliance with safeguarding, data protection, equality, diversity and inclusion, and health and safety policies, helping to create a safe and inclusive learning environment for all.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
* University degree or equivalent
* Language proficiency: Near‑native English; CEFR C2 / IELTS Academic 8.0+ in all four skills
* Cambridge CELTA/Trinity Certificate TESOL (TEFLi) or equivalent
* 2 years post-certificate experience (TEFLi) (and/or equivalent to 1,200 hours). Experience in teaching relevant age groups to be specified by the centre
• Early Years aged 2 to 5 (400+hours)
• Primary aged 6 to 10 (400+ hours)
• Lower Secondary aged 11 to 14 (800+ hours)
• Upper Secondary aged 15 to 17 (400+ hours)
• University/Vocational students aged 18 to 25 (400+hours)
• Adults General English 18+ (800+ hours)
Desirable
* Recognised diploma in EFL e.g., DELTA/ Trinity Diploma (TEFLq)
* Specialism where appropriate e.g., YL qualification: TYLEC (or equivalent), PGCE/BEd in Primary or relevant subject.
Important Information
* Location: the position is based in Bahrain, close to the capital city, in the residential area. The teacher will be required to work from our teaching centre
* Contract Hours: 37.5 contracted hours, inclusive of 24 hours of teaching. Teachers are expected to work 5 days a week and some weekends.
* Contract Type: This is a fixed term contract, full-time position
* Salary: 776 – 950 HYG per month, depending on experience and qualifications
* Benefits: Annual paid leave is 35 days plus 14 public holidays per year. Covered under the terms of the current local medical insurance scheme (staff and dependents under 18). You will be eligible for an accommodation allowance depending on your status. If you are recruited from outside Bahrain, the British Council will pay economy class air fares from your home country to Bahrain at the start of contract.
