Purpose of Position:


Project Engineers work closely with Project Managers and support staff to understand and fulfill the scope of the work. Depending on the size of the project, the Project Engineer will work directly with clients and internal staff, or support a Project Manager internally to complete assigned projects. Project Engineers manage and supervise internal staff including Designers, Specification Writers, System Modelers, and CAD Technicians to fulfill project goals.


Typical Duties:


  • Responsible for system design, layout, and equipment selections based on concepts provided by the Project Manager and Principal in Charge.
  • Utilize engineering, design and drafting programs to design systems and review CAD Technician’s and/or System Modeler’s work.
  • Utilize computer software including MS Excel, MS Word, and specific engineering programs such as Trane Trace, SKM, and AGI.
  • Coordinate design responsibilities with JPA design staff and with architects, peer consultants, utilities, and the Owner.
  • Survey existing buildings to document existing conditions and to verify physical fit of proposed systems. Utilize survey data to create existing condition drawings.
  • Attend meetings with project team and Owners to convey design intentions and coordinate design solutions.
  • Coordinate with vendors to obtain equipment selections and product data.
  • Perform construction phase duties that include review of product data and shop drawings, responses to contractor’s requests for information, site reviews, proposed change order review, and punch list activities.
  • Manage and supervise staff including Designers, Specification Writers, System Modelers and CAD Technicians.
  • Communicate staffing and schedule issues in a timely manner to management.
  • Perform duties with responsibility, professionalism, integrity, attendance, adherence to company policies, and excellent client service.
  • Promote the creation of premium quality, clear, and coordinated construction documents.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Responsibility Clarifications:


  • Responsible for the technical accuracy and coordination of the work performed. Although Project Engineers are not directly responsible for project profitability, marketing, client maintenance and similar Project Manager duties, actions taken will have a direct bearing on the success of individual projects and the office.


Knowledge and Experience Required:


  • Holds a degree from an ABET accredited engineering program, or has a high school degree with a minimum ten years of experience as a Designer.
