The successful candidate’s starting pay will fall within the pay range listed below. Base salary is localized according to an employee’s work location. Ranges are market-dependent and may be modified in the future.
For candidates living in Boston, MA, Denver, CO, New York, NY, Los Angeles, CA, Sacramento, CA, San Diego, CA, and Washington, DC, the pay range is $57,700 - $67,100.
This position requires that the employee reside within the DC, Maryland or Northern Virginia area.
The Associate Specialist, Environmental Health, provides programmatic support for APHL’s US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-funded work to strengthen public health laboratory efforts around chemical threat preparedness, overdose biosurveillance, human biomonitoring, wastewater surveillance for chemicals, and microplastics. The Associate Specialist, Environmental Health, provides administrative assistance for APHL environmental health program staff, the APHL Environmental Health Committee and related workgroups.
The Associate Specialist, Environmental Health, will work with the Environmental Health Senior Program Manager and other team members to implement project activities, facilitate member training, and provide administrative assistance to the Director of Environmental Health.
The Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) works to strengthen laboratory systems serving the public’s health in the U.S. and globally. APHL’s member laboratories protect the public’s health by monitoring and detecting infectious and foodborne diseases, environmental contaminants, terrorist agents, genetic disorders in newborns and other diverse health threats.
Responsibilities
~2 min read- →Provides administrative support, coordination and project management to the Senior Program Manager of Environmental Health to implement environmental health program activities, particularly activities of the National Biomonitoring Network, chemical threat preparedness, overdose biosurveillance, microplastics, and wastewater surveillance of chemicals.
- →Provides administrative support to environmental health program staff to implement APHL work plans for strengthening laboratory programs related to environmental health.
- →Organizes and coordinates member activities, travel and trainings related to environmental health program
- →Tasks to successfully complete these duties and responsibilities include:
- →Organizes and coordinates committee activities, workgroup meetings, trainings, webinars, and associated staff and member travel.
- →Takes detailed meeting notes, writes summary reports and articles for newsletters and other publications, and conducts research and analysis to develop survey, report, and other project drafts.
- →Maintains communication with APHL committees, CDC and other partners by email, telephone, and in-person meetings and represents APHL interests at meetings, scientific conferences and trainings.
- →Procures supplies and contributes to the preparation and distribution of collateral materials for meetings.
- →Assists in the creation and dissemination of invitation letters, certificates, agendas, and awards for meetings and events.
- →Enlists APHL member and staff experts and non-member experts to support implementation of activities, organizes project teams, manages communities of practices, monitors overall project performance and reports on project outcomes.
- →Monitors consultant and vendor contracts and reviews and evaluates technical and non-technical reports prepared by consultants and contractors.
- →Tracks financial activities and writes corresponding reports for assigned projects.
- →Communicates program activities and cooperative agreement reporting requirements with CDC project officers and other partners via written reports and phone calls.

Requirements

- This is either the entry level for staff members with a bachelor’s degree, or the equivalent, in an area of specialization or a senior level administrative position that requires substantive, relevant experience.
- The work performed is typically routine in nature, following standard processes, procedures, and solutions, and includes basic project coordination (organizing, budgeting, and complex scheduling), research, analysis and writing.
- The Associate Specialist works under immediate supervision and incumbents must know the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of a particular field of specialization.
- Positions at this level require a college education, possibly with a minimal level of work experience (or some equivalent preparation), or significant experience as a Senior Technician or the equivalent.
Chemistry, environmental public health and project management with attention to detail.
Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook email systems, as well as an adaptive nature to new computer programs and other digital tools. Excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to establish working relationships with diverse groups, work independently, multitask between a variety of departmental activities, organize work projects and complete tasks within assigned timeframes.
