The Senior Technical Services Specialist provides technical and administrative support to the Ophthalmic Repair Department and the Department of Technology Services. This includes the installation, maintenance, operation, repair, and transportation of related equipment. The specialist also performs all functions related to the demonstration, sale, and maintenance of student medical equipment

Responsibilities

  • Tracking student equipment orders and coordinating with vendors for pricing, receiving, and distribution.
  • Working with the Senior EHR Analyst and the Finance department tracking student orders, and sales.
  • Mentoring repair technicians and assisting the Senior EHR Analyst with ordering parts, tools, and materials, including inventory control.
  • Designing, engineering, and fabricating optical equipment, instruments, aids, and accessories.
  • Coordinating the loaner instrument program and assisting in the sale and disposal of obsolete equipment. 
  • Collaborate with faculty to confirm required equipment.
  • Order equipment for students in the OD & PA programs.
  • Coordinate equipment distribution to students.
  • Respond to student inquiries about their equipment.
  • Manage equipment warranties, which involves contacting manufacturers and sending back broken or repairable items.
  • Design, engineer, and fabricate optical equipment, instruments, low vision aids, teaching aids, research/development equipment, and computer accessories as needed.
  • Repair, adjust, and clean optics. 
  • Calibrate, troubleshoot, and mechanically and electrically repair a wide variety of ophthalmic instruments, including both modern and obsolete models, such as keratometers, refractors, biomicroscopes, lensometers, acuity projectors, perimeters, radiuscopes, examination chairs and stands, indirect ophthalmoscopes, and microscopes.
  • Maintain and operate all ophthalmic and audiovisual equipment at the University and satellite sites.
  • Assist with supporting the University's automated ophthalmic equipment at EP, TEI, and remote Salus satellite clinics.
  • Assist with supporting audiovisual equipment in lab and classroom environments as required.
  • Assist with the installation, configuration, troubleshooting, and repair of biomedical equipment, including M&S charts and other exam room and lab-specific equipment.
  • Mentor ophthalmic technicians and students on machinery techniques, instrument maintenance procedures, room layouts, mirror system layouts, and low vision lens drilling.
  • Work with the Senior EHR Analyst to contact vendors for pricing and availability of parts, bulbs, metals, woods, plastics, tools, and machine tools, and place orders. Solicit vendors for low bids on new ophthalmic equipment.
  • Dispose of obsolete equipment.
  • Coordinate the loaner instrument program with Salus and instrument manufacturer's representatives and distribute equipment as necessary.
  • Work with the Senior EHR Analyst to control the inventory of stock parts and instrument bulbs in the repair section, as well as stock of metals, plastic, nuts, bolts, and other supplies in the instrument shop. 
  • Manage inventory of equipment and its movement between satellite sites and the main campus, and maintain inventory control for the business office.
  • Work with the Senior EHR Analyst to manage Procurement Orders on behalf of the responsible Cost Center for parts, bulbs, instrument covers, and materials used for equipment repair and project fabrication. 
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Vocational or Technical School in or High School Diploma 
  • Experience in design, engineering, and fabrication of optical and related equipment and instruments.
  • Basic computer troubleshooting skills
  • Experience negotiating the purchase of equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Experience in inventory control.
  • Familiarity with OSHA safety rules and regulations.
  • Ability to represent the college professionally.
  • Ability to lift and move large pieces of equipment safely.
  • Valid Pennsylvania Driver's License
  • Typically standing, walking

Additional Information
This position is classified as Non-Exempt, grade Compensation for this grade ranges from  $21.71 to $32.57 per hour. Please note that the offered rate for this position will vary based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
